Charles Lemieux returned to action and didn’t appear to skip a beat, throwing a pair of touchdowns while the Blue Wings handled the Blacksmiths.
The Blacksmiths struggled to get going against the Blue Wings' defence having only 7 points until midway through the 3rd, but they showed some life late, which is promising moving forward.

Winnipeg Falcons - 7 @ Ottawa Royals - 30 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - Friday, June 19, 1970 - 6:00 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Mostly Cloudy
1st Q
0-7: OTT - PTD QB Drake Young -> TE Luiss de Brands

3rd Q
0-27: OTT - FG K Ira Foster
4th Q

7-30: OTT - FG K Ira Foster

The Royals did what most expected them to do and crushed the Falcons in the first WFU-NAAF matchup. Drake Young was especially hot in the first half with 3 touchdowns.
Winnipeg still fought till the end putting together some solid drives near the end of the game which included the lone touchdown of the game where RB Joe Rivers powered through the Royals’ line from 5 yards out.

Boston Independents - 20 @ Vancouver Wolves - 26 - Vancouver Exhibition Stadium - Friday, June 19, 1970 - 9:00 PM ET/6:00 PM PT- FNF - Weather: Clear
1st Q
0-3: VAN - FG K Sterling Brooks

20-16: BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Al Allmendinger
4th Q
20-23: VAN - RTD RB Jeremiah Morrow
20-26: VAN - FG K Sterling Brooks

A close battle between Vancouver and Boston was expected but overall, Vancouver’s performance shocked Boston as they appeared to be in control of the game. QB Kevin Westwood showed why he is the best QB from the WFU, making some stellar throws throughout the game.
Boston may have also come into the game a bit jet-lagged due to the long trip across the continent, but they kept it close, in fact, they had a chance to go down the field, but a costly fumble would end their day allowing Vancouver to extend their lead.

Toronto Steelheads - 14 @ London Tigers - 11 - Western Fair Stadium - Saturday, June 20, 1970 - 12:00 PM ET - Weather: Rain
1st Q
7-0: TOR - PTD QB Todd Baker -> TE Lucas Warmer
2nd Q
7-3: LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth
14-3: TOR - RTD RB Max Tracy
3rd Q
4th Q
14-9: LDN - DTD FUM LB Everett Lynch
14-11: LDN - 2PT - QB Emmitt Jackson

A rainy day in London caused a bit of a chaotic battle between London and Toronto. The rain did play into the Steelheads’ hands as they used their run-heavy attack to great effect getting up to a 3-14 lead.
The Tigers’ offence struggled throughout the day, but a late fumble recovered for a touchdown gave them a fighting chance, but QB Magnus Torrensen could not lead them to victory.

Louisville Thunder - 15, Minnesota Serpents - 24 - Thunder Stadium - Saturday. June 20, 1970 - 3:30 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q
7-0: MIN - PTD QB Martin Keller -> WR Ferdinand Matthews
7-7: LOU - PTD QB Buck Murphy -> WR Lloyd Lane
2nd Q
14-7: MIN - RTD RB Tyler Kuhn
14-14: LOU - PTD QB Buck Murphy -> WR Casey Coleman
3rd Q
17-14: MIN - FG K Ray Bough
24-14: MIN - RTD RB Tyler Kuhn
4th Q
24-15: LOU - Single K Elvis Franklin

Louisville is still going to have to wait for their first win since September 8th, 1968 as the offence shut down in the second half after a solid first-half showing. The loss now makes their 14-game losing streak the longest in NAAF history, surpassing a record originally set by the Worcester Athletics between 1960 and 1961.
Minnesota’s coverage-focused defence appeared to be the perfect match to the pass-heavy Thunder offence as they were able to shut them down in the second half.

Montreal Rouge - 14 @ Long Island Raiders - 23 - Long Island Stadium - Saturday, June 20, 1970 - 7:00 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
7-0: MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis
7-3: LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
2nd Q
7-10: LI - RTD RB Scott Norton
7-13: LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
3rd Q
7-16: LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
7-23: LI - RTD RB Scott Norton
4th Q
13-23: MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis

The Raiders looked refreshed for their Saturday night showdown with Montreal. The defence especially played well with the newly added depth, and DB Rutherford Winters had a strong game with 2 picks.
After their early touchdown, Montreal struggled throughout the game. QB Gene Bishop especially had trouble with 3 interceptions in the contest which could certainly spark some frustrations from the fans.

Providence Gold Stars - 10 @ Halifax Mariners - 13 - Atlantic Stadium - Sunday, June 21, 1970 - 12:00 PM ET/1:00 PM AT - Weather: Scattered Showers
1st Q
0-3: HFX - FG K Albert Wickerweaver
2nd Q
0-6: HFX - FG K Albert Wickerweaver
7-6: PRO - PTD QB Landon Ross -> WR Owen Paisley
3rd Q
4th Q
10-6: PRO - FG K Gilbert O’Neill
10-13: HFX - RTD RB Ed Finley

A defensive showdown in Halifax saw the Mariners get a narrow win over the Gold Stars with a late touchdown from RB Ed Finley, following a pair of clutch plays from WRs Shane Steadman and Jav Kerrigan.
Despite the loss, Providence felt good about their play, especially from the defence which did a great job of holding the Mariners at bay until late in the contest.

Edmonton Rangers - 41 @ Regina Wheat Kings - 17 - Broad Street Stadium - Sunday, June 21, 1970 - 3:30 PM ET/1:30 PM CST - Weather: Clear
1st Q
3-0: EDM - FG K Thomas Standberry
10-0: EDM - RTD RB Gary Hubbard
2nd Q
17-0: EDM - PTD QB Blair Collins -> WR Johnathan Duncan
17-3: REG - FG K Mark Mundle
24-3: EDM - PTD QB Blair Collins -> WR Shay Hopkins
3rd Q
31-3: EDM - RTD RB Gary Hubbard
31-10: REG - RTD RB Deion Chapman
4thQ
38-10: EDM - RTD RB Ed O’Connor
41-10: EDM - FG K Thomas Standberry
41-17: REG - PTD QB Rusty Lamb -> WR Nick Spalding

Edmonton flexed its might against the Wheat Kings. The offence just continued to find the endzone no matter what the Wheat Kings’ defence did.
Regina looked miserable until the second half when the team picked up some solid plays which turned into points, but by the 4th quarter they were playing many backups from the Rangers’.

Indiana Victors - 31 @ Calgary Tigers - 13 - Tigers Stadium at The Stampede - Sunday, June 21, 1970 - 7:00 PM ET/5:00 PM MT - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
0-3: CGY - FG K Billy Eichelberger
7-3: IND - RTD RB Tresean Jones
14-3: IND - DTD INT DB Neville Falkner
2nd Q
21-3: IND - PTD QB Tom Applewhite -> WR Jake Abberdezzi
3rd Q
28-3: IND - PTD QB Tom Applewhite -> WR Ed Edwards
28-10: CGY - RTD RB John Drexel
4th Q
28-13: CGY - FG K Billy Eichelberger
31-13: IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

Indiana would roll into Calgary and handle business. Tresean Jones would get his first as a Victor early, then DB Neville Falkner got his annual pick-6 and set the tone for the rest of the game with the Victors rolling to a 3-28 lead.
Calgary’s wild west offence would show some flashes of what ti could be with some big plays from RB John Drexel and WR Ted Jackson. However, they often ran into trouble when QB Jesse Essex needed to pass the ball, which included 2 interceptions on the day.

The Thunder finally put an end to their record-breaking losing streak with a strong win over the Toronto Steelheads. WR Casey Coleman was the key factor in the win, as he was able to outclass DB Oliver Langstrom for a pair of great touchdowns.
Toronto had a strong first half and held the lead, but they could not overcome the adjustments that the Thunder made in the second half.

Ottawa Royals - 18 @ Long Island Raiders - 23 - Long Island Stadium - Saturday, June 27, 1970 - 12:00 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy

The Raiders made a huge statement with a win over the Ottawa Royals to show that they are potential contenders this season. The defence especially stepped up to hold the Royals to only 18 points on the day.
The Royals made a late push in the game, but a big strip sack from Raiders’ DL Dallas Breaker would kill their last chance.

Boston Independents - 20 @ Halifax Mariners - 17 - OT - Atlantic Stadium - Saturday, June 27, 1970 - 12:00 PM ET/1:00 PM AT - Weather: Rain

Another rainy day in Halifax saw another close defensive duel, especially in the second half when the rain picked up. Luckily, the Mariners could fight through it and tie the game late. However, Boston would get the lone score in the extra frame after LB Mads Strahlman forced a fumble off of rookie TE Brandom McPhail.

Vancouver Wolves - 34 @ Regina Wheat Kings - 20 - Broad Street Stadium - Saturday, June 27, 1970 - 3:30 PM ET/1:30 PM CST - Weather: Cloudy

4th Q
27-13: REG - FG K Mark Mundle
34-13: VAN - KRTD RB Nikki Yang
34-20: REG - RTD RB Deion Chapman

It was smooth sailing for the Wolves who jumped out to a 24-7 lead against the Wheat Kings. Vancouver was letting off the gas in the second half, which allowed the Wheat Kings to get a couple of scores, but RB Nikki Yang would remove any chance of a comeback with a touchdown on the kickoff after the Wheat Kings’ second field goal.

London Tigers - 31 @ Montreal Rouge - 28 - Mount Royal Stadium - Saturday, June 27, 1970 - 3:30 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy

21-28: MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis
28-28: LDN - PTD QB Magnus Torrensen -> WR Cole Fletcher
31-28: LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth

After a scoreless first quarter, RB Jeremy Royal exploded for 3 touchdowns in the next two quarters. The 2nd year running back shredded the Rouge defence all day for 184 rushing yards.
QB Gene Bishop continued his struggles from week 1 with two interceptions but was still able to find the endzone 3 times. WR Taylor Karis remains the key piece in the offence putting up his league-leading 3rd and 4th touchdowns.

Minnesota Serpents - 14 @ Edmonton Rangers - 22 - Forest Heights Park - Saturday, June 27, 1970 - 7:00 PM ET/5:00 PM MT - SNF - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q

14-14: MIN - 2PT - RB Hugo Hughes
14-15: EDM - Single K Thomas Standberry
4th Q
14-22: EDM - RTD RB Gary Hubbard

The Rangers welcomed the Serpents into Edmonton only to outplay them all game long, showing that they absolutely can compete for the West Division playoff spots. The first half especially saw the Rangers’ defence have its way with Minnesota’s offence.
The Serpents did get the game tied in the 3rd, but it wouldn’t matter as the Rangers shut them down in the 4th.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 25 @ Providence Gold Stars - 7 - New Providence Stadium - Sunday, June 28, 1970 - 1:00 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q

3rd Q
24-0: BUF - PTD QB Charles Lemieux -> WR Tracy Driscoll
4th Q
25-0: BUF - Single K Ryan Perch
25-7: PRO - PTD QB Ulysses Lawyer -> WR Justin Palmer

The Blue Wings rolled into Providence and casually took a 25-0 lead. Charles Lemieux was picture-perfect all day except for 1 interception to S Tom Parrish. Providence’s offence was pretty much non-existent in the first 3 quarters only getting over mid-field once. QB Ulysses Lawyer was given the nod in the 4th quarter over QB Landon Ross and got the team in the endzone to avoid the shutout.

Calgary Tigers - 14 @ Winnipeg Falcons - 28 - Provencher Park - Sunday, June 28, 1970 - 1:00 PM ET/12:00 PM CT - Weather: Clear/Hot
1st Q
0-7: WPG - PTD QB Emerson Thompson -> WR Juwan Sylvester
2nd Q

7-21: WPG - PTD QB Emerson Thompson -> WR Terry Upshaw
4th Q
14-21: CGY - RTD QB Jesse Essex
14-28: WPG - RTD RB Mark St-Pierre

Extreme heat hit Winnipeg on Sunday certainly affecting the players on the field. Winnipeg was able to jump out to a 7-21 lead by the end of the 3rd quarter. Calgary would get a late drive, allowing both of their QBs into the game (Jesse Essex and Jerome Sheppard) to help keep them fresh, finding the endzone with a Jesse Essex run. RB Joe Rivers would go down late with cramps for Winnipeg, which allowed backup RB Mark St-Pierre to explode for a 64-yard touchdown easily outrunning the tried Calgary defence while on fresh legs.

Indiana Victors - 27 @ Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 34 - Riverfront Stadium of Pittsburgh - Sunday, June 28, 1970 - 4:30 PM ET - Weather: Clear
1st Q

4th Q
24-31: PIT - PTD QB Louis Vaughn -> WR Taylor Austin
24-34: PIT - FG K Al Highlander
27-34: IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

Pittsburgh and Indiana closed out the week with an offensive battle. Both RB Tresean Jones and RB Raymond Green were able to get majors against their former team. While Jones was having the better game he would be knocked out in the second half, which bumped the Victors down to 1 RB since Carl Blackwell-Lake left the game earlier. RB Shannon West was not strong in his first chance as a lead back and Pittsburgh was able to take advantage and pull away on the back of QB Louis Vaughn’s 3rd TD of the game.

The Royals bounced back from their loss in Long Island by trouncing the Mariners on Canada Day. The offence was consistent throughout the day, while the defence gave nothing up in the 2nd half.
Halifax played sloppy on the short week after a pair of gruelling rainy games.

The Victors’ home opener proved to be a much more difficult matchup than they expected with the Tigers. Indiana did bounce out to a strong lead in the 2nd half, but the Tigers crept back into it and took a lead in the 4th. Indiana’s offence was able to rebound and answer the bell in order for the team to pick up their 2nd win of the season.

The Wolves would continue their perfect start to the season with a win over the Falcons. Vancouver controlled the game for the first half and a bit, but Winnipeg would find a way to slip back into the game with a big 3rd quarter. However, in the end, they were not able to complete the comeback.

The Thunder would grab their first back-to-back wins since July 13, 1968, with a strong performance against the Gold Stars. Louisville’s defence was the star of the game with LB Le’Darius Wynn and 1st overall pick, LB Ricky Wildgoose causing havoc. Providence did change things up with QB Ulysses Lawyer getting the start after the offence was sputtering under QB Landon Ross. Lawyer didn’t have much luck as they were only able to get 11 points on the day.

After a pair of close games, the Independents made a statement in their home opener with the offence getting into the endzone 3 times in the first half. The Blacksmiths tried to battle back, but a steady stream of field goals would keep the Independents well in front.

After falling behind 24-16, QB Gene Bishop appeared to get fired up on the sideline with coaches getting in his face. Whatever was said appeared to wake up the veteran QB as he would throw a pair of TDs to WR Taylor Karis to come back and win the game. Edmonton did their best to bounce back, but the loud stadium and a timely interception from S Garet deVale would thwart any comeback attempt.

RB Tyler Kuhn took back the opening kick and the Serpents didn’t look back as they molly-whopped the Wheat Kings. Minnesota would be up by 28 heading into the final quarter, so they would give QB Leonidas Dumont a chance to close out the game, which got a standing ovation as Dumont was a big reason the Serpents had a great first season and he had bounced back from another bad injury. Also, Minnesota would have 3 different running backs score in this one with Richard Morin grabbing a late score.

As the week came to a close, the later Sunday games would turn out to be great. A big defensive play from LB Junior Abbott to punch the ball out in the 3rd turned into a touchdown when S Jarell Parker picked up the loose ball and scrambled into the endzone.  Long Island was able to bounce back and tie the game late, but Calgary was playing the best they had this season and would get into field goal range for K Billy Eichelberger to give them their first win of the season.

Buffalo managed to tie the game, but on 2nd and 1, RB Max Tracy would slip through a hole and take the back 68 yards to the house to steal a big win.

Montreal jumped out to a huge 21-3 lead in the first half of their game against the defending champs. QB Gene Bishop took advantage of a Buffalo secondary that would lose S Mathieu Cazenave early forcing DB Santino Arriola to step into the safety spot. To make matters worse, RB Jimmy Golden struggled to hold onto the ball for the second straight week, fumbling twice in the first half. RB Jasper Dickerson took over in the second half and helped Buffalo to come back but Montreal held on for the big win.

Pittsburgh bounced back from another loss with a strong win over London. The Blacksmiths dominated this game throughout making the Tigers’ day rough. QB Magnus Torrensen struggled for the Tigers with a pair of interceptions, leading QB Emmitt Jackson to get some snaps which turned into a solid drive late in the game.

The Victors grabbed a mighty win over the Royals as they propelled themselves to the top of the Central. Tom Applewhite had a strong day with 3 passing TDs, while the defence was all over the Royals. Ottawa left this game battered, losing 4 starters including RB Corbyn Knight and OL Tommy Reynolds for multiple weeks.

The Thunder had a scare in Regina, as the Wheat Kings were able to force overtime with a big play from WR Nick Spalding to set up the tying field goal. Regina looked like they could steal the game with an early pick-6 from Madison McGee, but the Thunder were able to answer back with a pair of touchdowns to win their 3rd straight.

Vancouver cruised on to a win over the Calgary Tigers. QB Kevin Westwood would have his most productive game of the season, throwing 3 touchdowns in the win. Calgary’s health would take another hit with starting QB Jesse Essex injuring his knee and DL Roger Barrett leaving the game as the team’s 3rd injury on the D-line. QB Jerome Sheppard stepped in, but the Tigers were too far back to make anything happen.

Providence Gold Stars - 21 @ Edmonton Rangers - 19 - Forest Heights Park - Saturday, July 11, 1970 - 7:00 PM ET/5:00 PM MT - FNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy - Attendance: 28,476

The pressure was starting to mount for the Gold Stars’ offence, who had only gotten, at most, 11 points in a game this season, and they delivered with a strong showing against the Rangers. QB Landon Ross was back under centre after being benched last week, and he threw a pair of touchdowns in the win. Their first win of the season did not come easy as Edmonton rallied late to get a field goal try on the game's last play. However, K Thomas Standberry’s kick would miss wide ending the game on a single.

Toronto looked to build off of their big win over the Blue Wings. They would have to work for it as the Winnipeg Falcons were able to bounce back from 2 different 10-point deficits. However, RB Max Tracy had enough and put the Falcons to bed with 2 touchdowns in the second half.

A heavy thunderstorm rolled through Minneapolis on Sunday, delaying the game between the Serpents and Mariners. The rain remained once the game finally started, making this Halifax’s 3rd rainy game in 4 weeks. It was a sloppy game with the score being 1-3 before a second weather delay occurred. It continued as a sloppy game with many turnovers, but the only one to get a major was Minnesota’s DB Davey Woods who took in a fumble caused by LB Orion Carter. The Serpents would hold on in the rain for their 3rd win of the season.

Boston and Long Island had an epic duel to close out week 4. The teams battled back and forth, literally, with only the Raiders scoring back-to-back times. An injury to RB Dareion Fields would help open up the Raiders’ offence which went more pass-heavy for the first time in probably a decade. The change helped the team sneak out a win over the Independents to maintain sole possession of first in the East.

Buffalo was able to get back on track with a strong win in their first of 3 straight games against teams named the Tigers. Lemieux was especially sharp with 2 passing touchdowns. QB Jerome Sheppard made his first start for Calgary and was still able to get the ball moving with the still-strong rushing attack, but they just couldn’t keep up with Buffalo.

Boston would end Toronto’s 2-game win streak to get back above .500, giving the crowd in Toronto a rough day. However, Toronto did stick around with a late touchdown from WR Alexei Dubois who scored a TD for this 4th different team. In the end, Boston’s offence was able to kill the clock and extend their lead to seal it.

Providence showed that last week’s win over Edmonton wasn’t a fluke, putting up another strong showing against the 3-1 Raiders. A DL Bartolo Cruz strip-sack would allow LB Kurt Warlock to get into the endzone for the defence in what was a back-breaking play. The Raiders still fought back with a 4th quarter TD, but they would still suffer their second loss in a game many thought they should win.

The injuries seemed to take a toll on the Royals as they fell flat at home against the Thunder. To the Thunder’s credit, they played well with the defence holding off the usually strong Royals attack in the first half, and giving the young QB Drake Young one of his worst performances with a pair of interceptions from DB Aquilio Ruiz.

After taking the Thunder to OT the previous week, the Wheat Kings were able to capture their first win of the season. QB Rusty Lamb would hit WR Adrian Hill on a last-play hail mary to secure the win. To make the loss worse for Edmonton, QB Blair Collins would leave the game with an injury following a monster hit from DL Andrew Morris, which led to a DL Cole Brentwood touchdown. QB Ken Myers replaced Collins and still got the team on the board with field goals, although more because of the run game.

Vancouver easily rolled on to 5-0 with a win over the Tigers. QB Kevin Westwood continued to look sharp with 2 more passing touchdowns, while the defence ate up London with DL Rashawn Sutherland grabbing a sack and a forced fumble. London’s offence continued to struggle under QB Magnus Torrensen, leading to a second consecutive game where QB Emmitt Jackson entered the game in the 4th quarter. Many are expecting Jackson to get the start next weekend as London heads down to Buffalo.

28-19: PIT - RTD RB Raymond Green

A very important game was on for Saturday Night as the Blacksmiths would get the season sweep of the Victors in another tight game. Pittsburgh felt in control of the game from the opening drive, but Indiana certainly pushed back in the 4th with the clutch touchdown from WR Ed Edwards. However, with Indy missing the 2-point attempt, Pittsburgh felt more motivated to get the ball in the endzone to secure the win and would with Raymond Green burying his former team.

Halifax rolled into Week 5 having only scored 43 points all season. However, something clicked in the offence and they rattled off 37 points to grab their 2nd win of the season. QB Lyle Painter rose to the challenge of kickstarting the offence throwing 5 touchdowns. Montreal had a strong start to this game, getting out to a 17-7 lead, but their defence just could not rebound once Painter and the Mariners got rolling.

Both teams started strong with a touchdown each in the opening quarter but struggled with some rain in the 2nd. In the 3rd, Minnesota’s rushing attack was able to get them on the board as they pulled away for their 4th win of the season, keeping them 1 game back of Vancouver.

The Raiders and Mariners went down to the wire in the first half of the Friday night doubleheader. Halifax was able to jump out to a 17-10 lead, however, it came at a cost with WR Jav Kerrigan suffering an injury on the drive. The Raiders, on the other hand, were struggling without RB Scott Norton, who left in the first half, however, they still had RB Dareion Fields who would give them a chance to win the game. K Henderson Schumacher would have the final say in the game with 10 seconds left.

The first NAAF Battle of Alberta would be a battle of backup QBs instead with Calgary starting QB Jerome Sheppard and Edmonton starting QB Ken Myers. Myers, of course, made his first career start in professional football. It turned out to be a big showing for Myers, who was quiet all game but ended up leading Edmonton on a comeback win with a pair of 4th quarter touchdowns to secure their 3rd win of the season.

Pittsburgh remained perfect on home field with a narrow win over the Steelheads. The Steelheads held a 6-point lead in the 4th, but QB Louis Vaughn would lead the Blacksmiths back to take the lead on a RB Raymond Green touchdown before DL Arthur Bradshaw would seal the win with a sack on 3rd down to force the turnover.

After dropping their second game of the year to Pittsburgh, the Victors rolled into Louisville looking to keep pace at the top of the very competitive Central division. QB Tom Applewhite continued his gunslinging ways, throwing 3 touchdowns including a clutch TD from WR Jake Abbredezzi who was able to beat S Graham Kensington deep with his speed.

Minnesota Serpents - 20 @ Vancouver Wolves - 17 - Vancouver Exhibition Stadium - July 25, 1970 - 3:30 PM ET/12:30 PM PT - Weather: Rain - Attendance: 35,149

While this is their first-ever meeting, the Wolves and Serpents might have a solid rivalry forming as the two teams battled for the top of the West Division. Minnesota played well in the first half rain, taking a 10-7 lead, but Vancouver bounced back in the 3rd with 10 points of their own. The final quarter would be a test for both teams as the rain picked up, but the Serpents’ run-game was built better and thrived in the ugly weather, allowing the team to counter with 10 more points and earning their 4th straight win and handing Vancouver their first loss in the NAAF.

The Independents returned home to end the Gold Stars' 2-game win streak on Saturday Night. The defence was able to stifle the Gold Stars’ attack, especially after RB Ronnie Byers left the game with an injury. Providence did manage to hang with Boston until the 4th when a long Boston drive killed the clock and extended the gap to 9 points.

Ottawa seemed vengeful in their first meeting with Montreal this season, as they were able to capture their first win since Canada Day. After a poor performance last weekend, QB Drake Young bounced back with a 3 touchdown performance, which could have been more if not for a S Garet deVale interception on the goalline. Luckily for Young, DL Bernhard Hartmann would grab a safety on the next play in his first game back from injury.

The Battle of Prairies turned out to be quite a fireworks show as Regina pulled off their second consecutive win. QB Rusty Lamb played well until he was knocked out of the game in the 3rd quarter. QB Lefty Lapointe entered the game and faired well, although mostly RB Deion Chapman did the work. QB Emerson Thompson in particular struggled for Winnipeg, throwing 4 interceptions in the loss, which might mean the Falcons could look at changing it up after the bye week.

QB Emmitt Jackson made his first start of the season where he did find the endzone with his feet, but his day was cut short by a minor injury resulting in QB Magnus Torrensen returning to action and then getting rolled over by the Blue Wings’ defence in the second half.

Providence bounced back from their loss to Boston last week, to grab their 3rd win in their last 4 games. The defence showed up slowing down the Royals who have struggled as of late with injuries as well as inconsistent play all around, Jean Matieau is certainly going to have to get the team back in shape if they want to stay in playoff contention.

Indiana Victors - 17 @ Halifax Mariners - 21 - Atlantic Stadium - Saturday, August 1, 1970 - 12:00 PM ET/1:00 PM AT - Weather: Cloudy/Light Rain - Attendance: 23,027

Indiana held a 10-point lead going into the final quarter before QB Lyle Painter led the Mariners on a comeback with a pair of touchdowns. The defence also played a key role with DL Pat Butler, stopping RB Shannon West in the backfield to force a punt late in the 4th which allowed the Mariners to take the lead on the ensuing drive.

Pittsburgh's hot streak continued through Louisville as they captured their 4th straight win. The offence kept a good tempo to maintain the lead while the defence continuously made the day a difficult one for QB Buck Murphy, who threw 3 interceptions in the losing effort.

The Raiders hooked up back-to-back wins with a strong showing against the Steelheads. With the defence getting back to health, they would manage to give Toronto a difficult time, especially DL Dallas Breaker who got to QB Todd Baker 3 times. While the Raiders maintain their stop atop the East, the Steelheads are continuing to stumble, losing their 3rd straight game.

24-25: MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis

A classic Bishop V Braddock battle would come down to the wire in Montreal. The Rouge got out to the Early lead, but soon Boston would gain control. The Independents would take a late 5-point lead in the 4th, but Montreal was able to string together one last drive to answer back. WR Taylor Karis caught his league-leading 10th touchdown of the season, being able to get open with Boston’s DB Mordecai King out of the game.

In their rematch with the Blue Wings, the Tigers made an interesting decision. QB Emmitt Jackson got banged up in the game last week, and while he was probably good to go, the Tigers remained cautious and allowed QB Gilles Doucet to make his first career start over the struggling QB Magnus Torrensen. Doucet faired well, throwing a TD pass and keeping the Tigers in the game, but they were never a match for the Blue Wings which had QB Charles Lemieux throw 4 touchdowns, 3 of which were to WR Tracy Driscoll who took advantage of an injured and inexperienced secondary.

The Regina magic wore off for the Wheat Kings who were outmatched by the red-hot Blacksmiths team.

The win, led by the Buffalo run-game, was their 4th in a row as they remained tied with Pittsburgh for top spot in the division. The Thunder dropped their 3rd straight game, bringing them back down to .500 after a 4-1 start.

QB Blair Collins returned for the Rangers and helped deliver a crucial win for the team, as they took down the Victors. The resurgent Rangers offence has found its footing getting out to a 30-15 lead on the considered contenders. Indiana still had some punch back with a late touchdown, but it appeared some of the age was showing on the defence as they fell behind.

London and Winnipeg would have the first tie in the NAAF since August 12, 1967. London had a roller coaster of a game with QB Emmitt Jackson getting his second start of the season, but left early once again, paving the way for QB Gilles Doucet to take over. Doucet performed well again, throwing a game-tying touchdown in the 4th. In overtime, each team traded blows, but after a clutch kick from Jordan Hollingsworth, the Falcons would hold off the Tigers to secure the tie.

After a strong 3-1 start, the Steelheads’ season has completely derailed. Not only did they get beat badly by the West Division-leading Serpents, but they also lost their star RB Max Tracy for the season. Toronto has now slipped to 3-5 following their 4th loss in a row. Concern still reached the Serpents sideline when QB Martin Keller took a hit in the 3rd which led to QB Leonidas Dumont finishing the game. Dumont did great, throwing a touchdown while Keller’s injury is only minor and likely won’t miss a game.

The Wolves had another scare coming off of their first loss of the season as the Calgary Tigers would take a late lead on a monster hit and forced fumble from DL Damien Battles. QB Kevin Westwood would receive the hit and be knocked out of the game, leading to a young Saskatchewan Provincial alum, QB Stanley Evans to take over. Evans would throw an interception, but he bounced right back to lead the Wolves on a game-winning drive, certainly getting on the radar of some other teams’ scouts.

A rough weather day in Winnipeg delayed the primetime game, but after the game was said and done, the Falcons had their second win of the season. Montreal’s offence struggled in the rain with several fumbles occurring during the contest, leaving the team in a tough spot heading into the playoff push.

The struggling Royals looked more like themselves on their trip to Boston. RB Corbyn Knight, who was back after an injury earlier in the season, made a big difference with a pair of touchdowns and 102 yards on the ground. The Independents’ offence could not find an answer for the Royals’ defence being stopped all day long.

Vancouver made the long trip to Halifax for Saturday Night Football. The Mariners came out swinging with a 6-10 lead at the break, however, in the 4th QB Lyle Painter would get knocked out of the game, forcing QB Michael Miranda into action. Miranda still got a field goal on the board for the Mariners, but the Wolves were able to shut down the offence after that drive. QB Kevin Westwood would answer the bell late in the game after struggling earlier with 2 interceptions, leading the Wolves to a comeback win to go to 7-1.

A defensive showdown in Providence saw two hot teams clash. The game's first touchdown would come in the 4th quarter with RB Ronnie Byers getting loose for a score. Minnesota remained close behind the Gold Stars, tying the game late, but a big play from WR Owen Paisley would give K Gilbert O’Neill a chance to win the game and the kicker would deliver to give Providence their 4th win in their last 5 games.

While Edmonton got a touchdown early in the 4th, Calgary grabbed the lead back with 2 field goals. QB Blair Collins would turn it up after falling behind and lead the Rangers on a game-winning drive that would earn them their 5th win of the season and pull them back to within a game of the Serpents.

1970 Trade Deadline

With many of the teams that would be considered sellers being from the WFU, the trade market was a bit stale heading into the deadline. However, there were still enough teams willing to make a move that there would still be 4 trades made.

PITTSBURGH PICKS UP O-LINE DEPTH IN JEFFREY UDUIKE

With a season-ending injury occurring to OL Lars Nordsson, the Blacksmiths made the extra effort to add a strong O-lineman to their team. They would make a move within the division acquiring veteran OL Jeffrey Uduike from the London Tigers in exchange for a 2nd round pick in 1971. Uduike has been a consistent piece on the Tigers’ O-line since being taken with the 9th overall pick in 1962. The veteran is a strong get for a Blacksmiths team that looks poised to make a run at the cup this season.

BUFFALO ADDS D-LINE DEPTH

Buffalo’s depth going into the last couple of seasons has certainly been a weakness, but the team has remained relatively healthy. However, you can never be too careful, so the team made a move to get some depth, making another in-division trade with the Toronto Steelheads. The Blue Wings would pick up DL Cal Ericsson and a 3rd Round Pick in 1971 in exchange for DL JR Stevens and a 5th Round Pick in 1971. Ericsson is not a special player but has had a lot of experience on the field with the Steelheads so he should be a good addition in a smaller role. Toronto might get away with a strong return as JR Stevens was the 26th pick in the 1970 NAAF Draft and still has a lot of potential as a player. Toronto had been eyeing up Stevens for their 3rd round pick, but Buffalo picked him up first.

CARTER ROY HEADS TO MINNESOTA IN PLACE OF INJURED RB TYLER KUHN

The Serpents saw their top RB, Tyler Kuhn, go down with a season-ending injury, so to make up for the loss, the team made a move for Carter Roy. Roy has been a fairly consistently featured back with the Rouge over his year and a half with the team and should fit in well behind RB Hugo Hughes. To get Roy the Serpents would give up a 3rd Round Pick in 1971 (Providence’s) and OL Elliot Owen. Montreal, who needed an O-lineman in place of OL Ross Guillebeaux, gets a solid option in Owen as well as the draft pick which is projected to be the better pick of the two 3rd Round Picks the Serpents had at the end of the season.

TORONTO ADDS RB FOR INJURED MAX TRACY

The Steelheads were in a position where the team might have been looking at potentially moving their star RB Max Tracy, whose contract ends at the end of the season, but with the injury that has thrown a wrench in any potential move and created a need at the position. In the end, they went out and got an inexperienced RB Alex Herbco from the London Tigers. Herbco hasn’t seen many snaps consistently in his career, and he is coming off of an injury from earlier this season, so the move looks a little desperate for the Steelheads. London would receive a 4th Round Pick in return.

WR Jake Abbredezzi was a key factor with a couple of big touchdowns to help in the win. Indy grabs a very important win as they end their 2-games skid and keep pace in the competitive Central.

The Falcons got a chance at redemption against their prairie rivals. However, Regina seemed in control of the contest in the first half. However, a comeback led by WR Terry Upshaw and QB Emerson Thompson would force overtime and give the Falcons with win with a pair of TDs in the extra frame to keep them alive in the playoff hunt.

QB Drake Young did leave the contest early for the Royals, which led to QB Tyrion Gainsborough playing out the final quarter and a half. Regardless, the Royals just couldn’t break through.

The Rangers gave the Blue Wings a run for their money on Saturday Night Football, but a determined QB Charles Lemieux would roll on to lead the Blue Wings to their 5th consecutive win, throwing 3 touchdowns in the process. WR Tracy Driscoll had a pair of them in the 2nd quarter as he could use his speed to get away from the slower Ranger defenders.

Minnesota would put a stranglehold on the West Division with an all-important win over the Wolves. A strong 4th quarter from the Serpents would give them their second win over the Wolves this season which puts them in a position to capture the division title next week. The Wolves put up a fight, but just could not solve the Serpents’ strong secondary late in the game.

Montreal’s defence continued to build off of a strong performance from last week, but their offence regressed being mostly shut down by the Gold Stars’ defence. Providence’s offence did just enough to capture their 6th win in their last 7 games and keep themselves in the running for the East Division.

Regina had some solid moments but was eventually outmatched by the Royals’ defence.

The Providence Gold Stars went to Long Island and won a very important game against the Raiders. QB Landon Ross threw two touchdowns in the win to give the Gold Stars their 5th straight win. The win does put the Gold Stars in a position where they could still clinch the East Division. The Raiders suffered their first loss since week 5, also to the Gold Stars.

Winnipeg continued their run down the stretch to keep their slim playoff hopes alive (needing an Ottawa loss later in the night). Winnipeg’s defence was the star in this game with LB Claude Clarke leading the way with 13 tackles. Calgary just had no answers and only more injuries.

Montreal Rouge - 17 @ Ottawa Royals - 24 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - Saturday, September 5, 1970 - 7:00 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy - Attendance: 44,842

With their backs against the wall, the Royals needed a big win over their rivals and they would pull off a win with a strong first 3 quarters. Montreal attempted a late comeback, but they fell short after a late interception from S Marc Bellecourt.

Buffalo Blue Wings - 29 @ Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 17 - Riverfront Stadium of Pittsburgh - Sunday, September 6, 1970 - 1:00 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy - Attendance: 48,425

A game that could decide the very competitive Central Division would be a solid game. The Blue Wings did get out to a strong lead in the first half, leading 16-7, but Pittsburgh bounced back with a strong 3rd to regain the lead. Buffalo countered with a touchdown early in the 4th, Pittsburgh’s attempts to answer would fall short while the Blue Wings would tack on another touchdown late to seal the win.

A rainy day in Vancouver led to a pretty tame match between Vancouver and Regina. The Wolves didn’t have to do much in order to grab their 8th win of the season, hence letting some backups come into the game late in the contest. Regina struggled in the rain but still pulled to within a touchdown, however, Vancouver’s defence closed it out.

QB Michael Benedict stole the show in Toronto, throwing 3 touchdowns to win Toronto’s 4th win of the season. On the other side, QB Emmitt Jackson was actually able to complete a game but overall struggled to move the ball. The strong performance from Benedict is promising for the Steelheads who could very well be looking for a new starting QB next season.

The final game of the week was the one with the highest stakes. The two rivals would show down in a game that could decided on which of the two teams could make the playoffs. The game would be back and forth throughout, ending tied after regulation. In the extra frame, the Victors would get an early field goal, but it would be the Thunder who bounced back with a touchdown quickly. They would hold off the Victors but were unable to get enough points to win the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Victors.

Providence would get a shot at a home playoff game and the East Division title with a strong win over the Montreal Rouge. QB Mike Key started for Montreal and had his team in the lead going into the break, but the Gold Stars were quick to bounce back with a pair of touchdowns in the second half to secure their 6th win in a row.

Long Island Raiders - 23 @ Halifax Mariners - 17 - Atlantic Stadium - Saturday, September 12, 1970 - 3:00 PM ET/4:00 PM AT - Weather: Clear - Attendance: 24,081

The Raiders needed a win or a Providence loss to secure the East Division. They would handle business up in Halifax, with an overall strong game led by the defence. However, QB Michael Miranda did have a strong day for the Mariners, showing the team what he has, throwing a pair of touchdowns and giving them a chance late.

23-26: PIT - PTD QB Louis Vaughn -> WR Orlando Barrack

Pittsburgh’s position felt safe going into the week, however, they may have taken it a bit too easy on the Steelheads who surprised the Blacksmiths. QB Madison Beck made his first career start for the Steelheads and played well and, with the help of a big defensive score from DL Johnathan Ellison, would win the game. The loss was embarrassing for the Blacksmiths who will now have to go on the road in the first round of the playoffs.

Louisville Thunder - 22 @ London Tigers - 28 - Western Fair Stadium - Saturday, September 12, 1970 - 3:00 PM ET - Weather: Clear - Attendance: 22,431

15-21: LOU - Single K Elvis Franklin
4th Q
22-21: LOU - PTD QB Buck Murphy -> WR Lloyd Lane
22-28: LDN - RTD QB Emmitt Jackson

Pittsburgh was not the only team to have troubles with a perceived easier opponent as the Thunder struggled against the struggling London Tigers. Louisville still had a shot to win after a touchdown from WR Lloyd Lane gave them the lead. However, London would have the last say as QB Emmitt Jackson would make a jaw-dropping play where he ran through the entire Thunder defence en route to a 21-yard touchdown run to give the Tigers the late lead. The loss puts the Thunder’s season on the line as an Indy win and either Boston or Ottawa winning would end their year.

The Victors were in a win-or-go-home situation heading into Buffalo. While the Victors did strike first, Buffalo bounced right back to take a 7-17 lead. In the 3rd, both teams struggled to move the ball, especially Buffalo as they were playing more conservatively to avoid injuries. In fact, the Blue Wings would let QB Travis Jackson take over in the 4th in order to rest QB Charles Lemieux. However, it would be the turning point in the game as the Victors would get a touchdown before DB Neville Falkner would get the ball back and set up the go-ahead score to secure the Victors’ playoff berth.

Both QBs battled it out in a surprisingly fun game which did see a late Wheat Kings comeback earn the team their 3rd win of the season. With the 27 points against the Wheat Kings have now set the record for most points allowed in a single season with 399.

In the extra frame, both teams would get points on the board, but Vancouver had the last say to secure the win.

After all the chaos in the afternoon, the battle between the Royals and Independents would decide who would be the 8th and final playoff team, the winner of the game or Louisville if the teams tied. Unfortunately for the Thunder, the game would not end in a tie. The two teams battled back and forth in one of the cleanest games in terms of turnovers with only 1 interception in the game that game in the final quarter. In the end, the Royals would manage to get the late punch in with a stellar drive from QB Drake Young to secure the playoff berth.
