1964 Award Winners

Most Valuable Player - RB Jimmy Golden BUF
A record-breaking season for Golden makes him the first RB MVP since RB Élisée Marchal back in 1951. While he only won by a couple of votes over QB Gene Bishop, the RB was clearly the best player all year long and extremely important to the Blue Wings returning to the playoffs after back-to-back 4-7-1 seasons.

Playoff MVP - RB Dareion Fields LI
While the Raiders feel short of their ultimate goal, Fields was absolutely unbelievable in all 3 games they played in the playoffs. The East Division Final against Montreal was probably the key game as the RB had 3 touchdowns in the come from behind victory to get them back to the McCallister Cup for the first time since 1958. 

Offensive Player of the Year - RB Dareion Fields LI
While Fields didn’t receive a single vote for MVP, he was able to earn his second OPOY award with an excellent season. He had 20 touchdowns, which is typically a league-leading amount. If it weren’t for Golden’s record-breaking 24 scores, Fields would easily have been the best RB in the league this season.

Defensive Player of the Year - DL William Sanderson IND
It was finally time to recognize the abilities of DL William Sanderson who has put up league-leading numbers throughout his career but had been almost forgotten with the struggling Victors. Sanderson is one of the most feared but respected DL in the league and it is nice to see that he will get recognized for his play.

Special Teams Player of the Year - K Arthur Kettinger MTL
Kettinger was a kicking machine this season, scoring the next closest kicker by 19 points. This win marks Kettinger’s second STPOY award, his last being back in 1953 which was his rookie season. 

Rookie of the Year - RB Max Tracy TOR
There was not a lot of competition from rookies this season, but that should not take away from a strong performance from the 1st overall pick this season. Tracy was able to shine despite splitting his snaps with RB Tommy Allen and RB Alex Warren. He managed to lead the team in rushing touchdowns with 7 (over Allen’s 6), and showed that he should be a great piece for the future in Toronto. 

Coach of the Year - Ronald Martin TOR
It was a little difficult for many of the Steelheads to make the transition from Canadian football rules to Hybrid Football rules, but HC Ronald Martin was able to lead the team into a new era and not only help them adjust after an 0-2 start but to go 7-3 in the next 10 and make the playoffs in their first season. A great job was done by a veteran coach. 

Breakout Player of the Year - DB Rutherford Winters LI
His younger teammate, DB Lauri Hayha took home this award last year, which might have been taken personally by Winters who had a great breakout season this year. Having more support around him allowed Winters to be more aggressive this season and it paid off with a career-high 4 interceptions. With Hayha and now Winters coming into their own, the Raiders are likely going to be a scary team to throw against for years to come.

47th McCallister Cup Host - Milton Charles Stadium - Buffalo, NY - Capacity: 54,000
The last time Buffalo saw the McCallister Cup game played in the city was back in 1952, but after the team got a brand new stadium, there was no way that they would not get another chance to host the game. Buffalo famously had overfilled their old stadium for the 1952 game in order to get as many fans in the stadium at the time. While it shouldn’t need to happen this time, it does show the passion for the game that the fans of Buffalo have.

MVP

RB Jimmy Golden BUF
Setting a new record for most rushing touchdowns (24) in a season is probably the best thing to have on your MVP resume. Golden was the heartbeat of the Blue Wings’ offence this season and the main reason they were able to return to the top of the West Division. 

RB Dareion Fields LI
Fields was neck and neck with Golden for most of the season in terms of stats and was also a major help to his team’s success. Fields had 20 Rushing touchdowns this season, which was 12 more than the rest of the offence combined. Fields continues to be one of the most valuable members of the Raiders. 

QB Gene Bishop MTL
Gene had an excellent season for the Rouge this season leading the team back to the top of the East Division. Bishop’s ability to spread the field worked brilliantly with HC Perry Powell’s offensive strategy and allowed the team to be the highest-scoring team this season. 

Offensive Player of the Year
RB Jimmy Golden BUF - 24 Rushing Touchdowns (1st), 1st in Rushing Yards
Records being set certainly makes a player shoot up to the top of a OPOY favourite. Golden’s excellents season is going to be hard to beat
RB Dareion Fields LI - 20 Rushing Touchdowns (2nd), 2nd in Rushing Yards
Fields was right behind the top RB in Golden all season long and certainly had a season that in any normal season would likely have put him at the top of rushing leaders.
QB Gene Bishop MTL - 20 Passing Touchdowns (2nd), 1st in Passing Yards
Bishop’s strong offensive output came with a lot fewer mistakes and a lot more big plays, as he truly continues to come into his own as a top QB in the NAAF. 
WR Derek Cross MTL - 11 Receiving Touchdowns (1st), 2nd in Receiving Yards
Going up against the MVP candidates will be tough, but Cross was the league’s best WR this season being able to create big play after big play to help Montreal dominate through the air. 

Defensive Player of the Year
DL William Sanderson IND - 8 Forced Fumbles (1st), 1st in Sacks
Sanderson is often not thought of due to the fact that he plays for the Victors, but he was playing at an unreal level this season leading the league in forced fumbles and creating a lot of havoc for offences around the league. 
S Johnny Berger LOU - 5 Interceptions (T-2nd), 1 Defensive Touchdown, 1st in tackles from defensive backs and safeties
Johnny Berger is one of the best safeties of his time and hasn’t always gotten the true recognition for it, but he had a strong season with 5 picks and made the Thunder the toughest team to throw downfield against.
DB Neville Falkner PRO - 8 Interceptions (1st), 2 Defensive Touchdowns
The winner of the last two DPOY’s once again dominated on the field, continuing to prove that he might be the greatest DB to play the game.

Special Teams Player of the Year
K Frank Hughes LOU - 22 Field Goals (2nd), 26 Extra Points, 1 Single, 93 Points (2nd)
Hughes was very important to the Thunder’s offensive output this season which has not been great the last couple of seasons.
K Arthur Kettinger MTL - 26 Field Goals (1st), 34 Extra Points, 112 Points (1st)
Kettinger lit up the goalposts this season putting up 19 more points than any other kicker this season. His 112 points made up 35% of Montreal’s points this season. 
K Bob Randall TOR -  21 Field Goals (3rd), 28 Extra Points, 91 Points (3rd)
Toronto’s Bob Randall was super helpful in keeping Toronto in games this season. 

Rookie of the Year
OL Millard Streety HFX - Least amount of pressures among rookie OL.
Streety was promoted to the Mariners’ roster this season and immediately stepped into a starting role on the O-line and was able to make a big impact for the young team, especially in pass defence.
DB Jerome Caldwell OTT - 3 Interceptions (T-9th) 
Caldwell likely would have made a stronger push for rookie of the year had it not been for a major injury that kept him out for most of the season, however, when he was playing Caldwell was a major defensive impact for the Royals this season.
RB Max Tracy TOR - 7 Rushing Touchdowns (T-9th)
The 1st overall pick was a great addition for the Steelheads. While he didn’t get as many starting snaps as he would like, he still made the most of them, scoring 7 times and helping the Steelheads to the playoffs. 

Coach of the Year
HC Maurice Evanson BUF - Record: 8-4
Evanson’s return to the NAAF was an impactful one, being able to get the Blue Wings back into the playoffs after back-to-back disappointing seasons. He was able to revamp the young offence and help them back to a division title. 
HC Perry Powell MTL - Record: 8-3-1
Powell took over the HC role this season for the Rouge and was able to push the Rouge back to the top of the league. His offensive mind helped the Rouge to the #1 scoring team this season.
HC Ronald Martin TOR - Record: 7-5
It was going to be a difficult task to make the jump from the OFU to the NAAF, but Martin was able to handle it well and put the Steelheads right in the hunt and make the playoffs in their first season.

Breakout Player of the Year
S Wesley Jones BUF - 2 Interceptions (T-17th)
Wesley Jones finally got the opportunity to be the main guy in Buffalo after S Frazier Brooks retired this offseason. The young safety was able to do what Brooks had always done proving himself in his first season.
DB Rutherford Winters LI - 4 Interceptions (T-7th), 1 Defensive Touchdown
Winters was able to step up this season after being overshadowed by DB Lauri Hayha’s breakout season last year and be one of the league’s top DB’s.
DL Lucas Kipling MTL - 4 Forced Fumbles (T-8th)
Kipling has grown a lot in his first few seasons in the NAAF and this season he started to be a leader on the Montreal D-line and was able to make a strong impact all season long.

Richardson Stadium - Boston, MA - Capacity: 45,265 - Last Hosted: 1957 
Boston is the classic home to the championship game, so it is always a great place to host the game. So they are always willing to put their name in the hat. 
Milton Charles Stadium - Buffalo, NY - Capacity: 54,000 - Last Hosted: 1952 (Buffalo Civic Stadium)
It has been over a decade since one of the league’s best fan bases were able to host the league’s championship game, and with the new stadium, it seems like the perfect time to bring it back to Buffalo

Buffalo Blue Wings VS. Long Island Raiders - New Providence Stadium - October 4, 1964 - 6 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy 18ºC | 65ºF - TV: Jerry Goldbridge and Jackie Calhoon
1st Q
The battle of New York was obviously going to be centred around the running back duel between RB Jimmy Golden of the Blue Wings and RB Dareion Fields of the Raiders. However, neither team was able to get going early on. It was both of the defences that were able to step up as they clearly took the time to develop strong strategies to contain the explosive weapons. Buffalo would be the first to start to attack through the air. QB Charles Lemieux was able to connect on a few plays that allowed them to make up some ground. They would be the first team to strike to make it 3-0, but that was all that was to come from the opening quarter.

2nd Q
The ensuing quarter would continue to roll with defence being the main controller of the game. However, RB Jimmy Golden was starting to find a little bit of space and was able to get Buffalo into scoring range. QB Charles Lemieux would connect with TE Tanner Tint to get down to the 3-yard line before Golden took in the game's first major to make it 10-0 Blue Wings. Once again, the Raiders found themselves in a tricky situation and would need to start making something happen. The Blue Wings defence was limiting what the Raiders could do out of the backfield, so they were forced to go to the air. QB Stanley Troyer would step up to make a few throws connecting with WR Casey Coleman and WR Wilson Queensgate to get the team into field goal range to get at least 3 back before the break. 
BUF 10-3 LI

3rd Q
The 3rd quarter was going to have to be an important one for the Raiders, who were looking to build on their field goal from the end of the second. The offence would get the ball first, but they were quickly stopped by the Blue Wings. Buffalo would get the ball and QB Charles Lemieux was looking to go to work. He would drop back to see WR Zachariah Pembroke make a break, but at the last second, the WR made another route change. Lemieux had already thrown the ball and DB Rutherford Winters was all over it. The Raider had great field position, and RB Dareion Fields would be able to get the team into the endzone to tie the game up at 10. The lead was now gone for the Blue Wings and they would be hoping to get back on the board, however, the Raiders defence was starting to get into their heads. DB Lauri Hayha would almost pick off another Lemieux pass and DL Vernon Spears was able to grab a sack. The Raiders continued to push and were moving the ball down the field as the quarter came to an end.
BUF 10-10 LI

4th Q
The Raiders would continue their drive in the 4th quarter, however, a big tackle from LB Orion Carter would stall out the drive at midfield. The Raiders would pin the Blue Wings on their own 3-yard line with a great punt from K Henderson Schumacher. Buffalo would look to get out, but the Raiders were all over and would force the 2 and out. K Ryan Perch was unable to get it very far leading to the Raiders continuing with the field position battle. QB Stanley Troyer would open the next drive with a 38-yard shot to WR Casey Coleman. The Raiders would get back into the endzone with Dareion Fields breaking it to the outside to give the Raiders a 10-17 lead. Buffalo was not going to be knocked out that easily, however, they did have to deal with RB Jimmy Golden losing his temper a little on the sideline with frustration. QB Charles Lemieux would step in as the captain and longtime teammate of Golden and get him focused. He would lead the team out on the next drive and they were flying. Lemieux hit target after target and Golden was able to make a couple of strong runs. Buffalo was suddenly within striking distance. They would get down to the 12 and then Lemieux would fake the handoff to Golden and then roll to find WR Julius Drake open in the endzone. The game was once again tied with 4 minutes to go. Both defences were tight from this point out as the teams traded a couple of short drives. With 1:24 to go the Raiders were looking to make a final push. Troyer needed to go through the air. He would look for WR Larry Mossholder, but his pass was off and would be incomplete. On 2nd down, the Blue Wings brought a little extra pressure with LB Harrison Bennett going in on the blitz. The play allowed DL Lonnie Vincent to get through and he would hit Troyer before he could throw, causing a sack and forcing the punt. Buffalo would get the ball and only had 0:58 to try and get into range. Lemieux would be the one the Blue Wings relied on as the QB was able to slowly take a few yards at a time. However, it was scary when DL Pionk Bjorkkstrand broke through the line and managed to trip up Lemieux for a 5-yard loss leading to a 2nd and 15 just out of range. Lemieux took the ensuing snap knowing the team needed to pick up the yardage. He would feel some pressure from the Raiders D-line, but he was able to escape before getting the ball to WR Daniel Irons to pick up 17 yards. They would inch a bit closer with a short run to Golden. The clock was pretty much drained as K Ryan Perch took the field to attempt the game-winning field goal. With the crowd in Providence holding their breath the ball would be snapped. The Australian kicker would take his steps and boot the ball. It came off with a womble, but then it settled and sailed through the uprights clinching the Blue Wings their 3rd McCallister Cup.

*Fun Stat: Buffalo is an odd team that has never won and lost a playoff game in the same season, either they get beat in their first game or they win the title.

EAST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL
Boston Independents VS. Long Island Raiders - Richardson Stadium - September 20, 1964 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Clear 18ºC | 65ºF - TV: Benjamin O’Donnell and William Arland
1st Q
The battle between Boston and Long Island started very defensive. Both opening drives ended with 2 and outs. The Raiders would be the first team to take a big step forward on an explosive 32-yard run from RB Dareion Fields. The Raider would be able to get into field goal range and would be the first to score with a K Henderson Schumacher field goal. Boston would look to counter, but the pressure from the Raiders’ defensive line was very difficult to manage and they would remain behind 3-0 after the opening quarter.
BOS 0-3 LI

2nd Q
The Raiders would look to add to their lead early in the second with QB Stanley Troyer finding WR Casey Coleman for a pick-up of 28 to put the ball into the redzone. RB Dareion Fields would take care of the remaining work and would take in the touchdown a couple of plays later to give the Raiders a 0-10 lead. Boston was hoping to rebound, but Braddock was still struggling with the pass rush. However, he would be able to improvise and escape the pressure and find WR Chester Bennett for a big play that would allow the Independents to finally get on the board with a K Johnnie Berg field goal. In the remaining minutes of the quarter, the Raiders continued to push the ball down the field themselves and would get a late field goal to take a 10-point lead into the break, much to the displeasure of the Boston faithful.
BOS 3-13 LI

3rd Q
It was all about getting the Independents back into the game early in the second half for QB Nathaniel Braddock. He looked like a man on a mission early, being more decisive with every throw. He would turn the game around quite quickly on the opening drive by taking the team down to the redzone. He would then connect with WR Ellis Lindholm in the endzone to cut the Raider lead down to just 3 points. The Raiders would look to be right back on the offensive, but Boston’s defence was stepping it up. LB Konrad Aust would step up and grab an interception off of QB Stanley Troyer. Boston felt the momentum shifting, however, only a few plays later, DB Alexander Bradley would get the ball right back with an interception of his own. He almost got into open field to potentially bring it back for a score, but WR Alexei Dubois was able to get to him first. The Raiders’ offence would return to the field and would score a field goal a couple of plays later to extend their lead to 6. Braddock rebounded from the interception on the next drive. The drive resembled the first drive of the half with Braddock methodically marching the offence down the field. He would find WR Alexei Dubois open for a big score to give them a lead heading into the final quarter
BOS 17-16 LI

4th Q
The final quarter was intense with both teams going all out on both sides of the ball. Early on the Raiders would get a break with a big run from Dareion Fields that would set up K Henderson Schumacher to retake the lead 17-19. Boston would follow up the score with a field goal of their own on the ensuing drive following a great play from WR Chester Bennett to get them into range. It was now 20-19 for Boston and time was running out for the Raiders. They have relied a lot on RB Dareion Fields all season, however, with limited time they were going to need QB Stanley Troyer to step up. The Independents’ defence was tough to break, but a couple of runs from Fields would help loosen them up and allow for Troyer to make a couple of passes. They would get into Boston territory, but they still needed several yards to get into field goal range. Boston would lock them down on first down with DB Lawrence Ralph batting away a pass to WR Larry Mossholder. Troyer needed to make a play on 2nd and he would drop back and scan the field. Unfortunately, DL Timmy Kerr came flying through the line. Kerr got a hand on Troyer’s back but the QB was able to slip away. Troyer had more pressure coming, but he would see an opening and would make a huge throw down the field. WR Casey Coleman had been able to get loose and he would be open to make a grab downfield. DB Lawrence Ralph had gotten caught behind, and Coleman was able to easily outrun him to the endzone to score and give the Raiders a 20-25 lead. Boston would be able to stop the 2-point attempt to give them a chance to win with a touchdown. Braddock would step onto the field determined and started to push the Independents down the field. With a last-ditch effort, Braddock would see WR Chester Bennett open and would get the WR the ball, however, he was not close enough to score and the Raiders would make the stop to hold on for their first playoff win since their 1958 McCallister Cup win.

WEST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL
Toronto Steelheads VS. Louisville Thunder - Anderson Stadium - September 20, 1964 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Mostly Cloudy 15.5ºC | 60ºF
1st Q
The Steelheads’ NAAF playoff debut got off to a solid start on their end. QB Todd Baker was able to push the offence down into the redzone on their opening drive, which was quite surprising considering how good the Thunder defence can be. Luckily for Louisville, that defence would stand strong with their backs against the wall and they would force a field goal. The Thunder were aiming to counter quickly, and they would with RB Rodney Clark breaking loose for a couple of big gains. Clark would eventually punch it in from 3 yards out to make it a 3-7 game.
TOR 3-7 LOU

2nd Q
The Steelheads were able to knock down another field goal to start the second quarter and cut the lead to just 1. However, on their next drive, they ran into, or rather threw, into trouble as DB Oliver Langstrom, who was finally back in the lineup, would grab an interception to set Louisville up nicely. The Thunder continued to push the ball with RB Rodney Clark and RB Greg Dix before QB Leonidas Dumont would find WR Darryl Duke open in the endzone to give them a 7-point lead. With some confidence, the Thunder would go for 2 to make it a 2-score game early. RB Rodney Clark would take in the sweep to score the 2-pointer. Toronto was starting to feel the pressure, but QB Todd Baker would stay calm. With RB Max Tracy struggling early on, RB Tommy Allen would step up with a couple of strong runs. Eventually, Baker would then find WR Edmund Landry open from 15 yards out to pull within 2 heading into the break.
TOR 13-15 LOU

3rd Q
The Steelheads were hoping to maintain momentum out of the break. Their defence would step up to stop Louisville’s opening drive with LB Rusty McVee getting to QB Leonidas Dumont on the surprise blitz on 2nd down. The offence would get the ball back and would add 3 more points to their total to take the lead 16-15. The Thunder offence was quick to counter with a field goal of their own to retake the lead. The defence would come to play a vital role down the stretch for the Thunder as LB Scotty Williams would manage to punch the ball loose from RB Tommy Allen near the end of the quarter. The ball flew right over to S Johnny Berger, who would return it into Steelheads’ territory. The ensuing drive would end with RB Rodney Clark taking in his second score of the game giving Louisville the 9-point lead heading into the final quarter.
TOR 16-25 LOU

4th Q
It was looking pretty dire for the Steelheads, who were struggling to move the ball against the Thunder defence. Baker was running out of time to make something happen, so he would get a bit more aggressive. It initially did not pay off with the QB throwing a second pick to DB Jayden Mills, however, he would not be deterred and would breakthrough on the next time out. Baker would find WR Samuel Petri for a score at the end of the drive to cut the lead back down to two. The Thunder offence was certainly playing it safe, but their defence continued to pile the pressure on. Eventually, DL Clyde Dale was able to get around the Steelheads’ pass protection and chase down Baker for a loss of 12. The loss would pin Toronto inside their own 10. They would have to gamble on 3rd, but Bakers’ pass attempt would be knocked away by DB Oliver Langstrom. The Thunder would try to kill the clock before adding 3 more to their total sealing the win 23-28.

If week 13 proved anything, it's that this could be a close duel. The Rouge enter this game on a 4-game win streak and looked to be the hottest squad heading into the playoffs. The Raiders on the other hand had a lot of questions about playing the better teams, but they silenced those critics last week. The game should be a hard-fought duel with the league’s top offence taking on the league’s top defence. In the end, I am going to take the experience advantage and say that the Rouge will return to the McCallister Cup.

West Division Final - Buffalo Blue Wings VS. Louisville Thunder
Head-to-Head: W3 LOU 23-13 BUF, W5 BUF 30-10 LOU
Neither of the first two matchups between Buffalo and Louisville were particularly close, however, entering the playoffs there is certainly hope that both of these teams will be able to rise to the challenge. The Thunder defence looked strong against the Steelheads, but they certainly will have to find a way to manage RB Jimmy Golden. Buffalo will be hoping that both Golden and QB Charles Lemieux show up and perform. The Golden factor seems to be the most important in this matchup and I’m betting on Golden to perform. I’ll maintain my preseason prediction and have the Blue Wings get back to the Cup.

QB Gene Bishop was ready to rumble for the battle between the Rouge and the Raiders and got the offence off to a hot start. They would grab a quick field goal on their opening drive, and then they would find themselves in the endzone on their second drive. Bishop would toss the touchdown to WR Taylor Karis to give them a 10-0 lead. The Raiders’ offence was not able to get on the same page early, but after the two Montreal scores, they were able to salvage a field goal to make it 10-3 after the first.

2nd Q
The second quarter would continue to steer in Montreal’s favour with DB Quentin Xaiver coming down with an interception and setting up the offence in Raider territory. QB Gene Bishop would take the opportunity in stride getting the team down to the 5 before RB Scott Mallard-White punched it in to make it 17-3 Montreal. The Raiders’ offence was being stifled by the Rouge defence who was able to contain RB Daeion Fields. All the Raiders could muster was another field goal before the break.

The Raiders made some adjustments out of the break in an attempt to start getting the offence going, but the Rouge defence stood tall and continued to shut down the Raiders. The offence was still cooking as well with Bishop leading them back to the redzone midway through the quarter, where Mallard-White was able to take it in for the second time in the game. The Rouge were in a comfortable spot, however, they would miss the extra point after DB Lauri Hayha was able to use his speed to get around and block the extra point. The Raiders tried to bring it back the other way but were stopped. However, the block gave the team a bit of a boost. The offence got back onto the field and they finally got the ball moving. QB Stanley Troyer was able to connect with WR Larry Mossholder for a 20-yard play before finding WR Casey Coleman for a 7-yard pass that he then turned into a 23-yarder. The Raiders were all of a sudden knocking on the Rouge’s doorstep. RB Dareion Fields would be able to take the ball into the endzone to pull the Raiders back into the game.

The Raiders’ strong 3rd quarter drive seemed to have made the Rouge feel a little nervous. Especially when the Raiders turned up the pressure. QB Gene Bishop found himself running all over the backfield trying to make plays. He was able to do so, however, he would soon make a mistake throwing an interception to DB Alexander Bradley. Bradley used his quick feet to return it 24 yards the other way, setting up the Raiders in Rouge territory. Troyer continued to push the ball down the field before once again, Fields would take it in to make it 23-20. The Rouge were really becoming antsy as their next drive would end in a 2 and out with Bishop forcing a couple of passes and the Raiders continuing to bring the pressure. The Raiders’ offence kept the ball moving and after a 29-yard gain from WR Casey Coleman, K Henderson Schumacher would knot the game up at 23 apiece. It was getting intense now as the Montreal crowd was shocked by the sudden comeback. However, Montreal was not going to back down. Bishop would retake the field and would push the offence down the field. He would manage to find WR Yahui Sun, who had taken over for the injured WR Frederick St.Pierre, and he would escape for a 27-yard play that would set up K Arthur Kettinger to give them back the lead. Down by 3, the Raiders needed to make something happen, once again it would likely have to come from the arm of Stanley Troyer. The QB was doing what he could and would get a couple of first downs with the help of RB Dareion Fields and WR Casey Coleman. They would get to around midfield before Montreal was able to hold them up. It was 2nd and 10 after an incomplete pass, Troyer would drop back and after a couple of seconds, he would fire it to WR Larry Mossholder. Mossholder would scramble but would be brought down right before the markers. It was now 3rd and 1, the Rouge were stacking it up on the line, while the Raiders were looking to just keep their season alive. The ball was snapped and the two forces collided. Dareion Fields got the ball, and out of the blue a hole burst open, Fields hit it in stride. He picked up the 1st, but then he found out he was in open field. There was no one in front of him, he picked up speed and he was gone. 52-yards later Fields was in the endzone to give the Raiders a 4-point lead. Montreal was shocked by the play and they would not recover, the Raiders were back in the McCallister Cup for the first time since 1958.

Louisville was hoping to maintain their offensive production from their win over the Steelheads against the Blue Wings. However, it was a tough start for the offence with DL Lonnie Vincent breaking through to knock the ball out of the hands of QB Leonidas Dumont. Buffalo was able to pick it up and, soon enough, RB Jimmy Golden was in the endzone to give them a 7-0 lead. The Thunder would aim to recover from the early mistake, but the Blue Wings defence was much more difficult to manage than they anticipated and they would be shut down in the opening quarter.

Buffalo maintained the pressure into the ensuing quarter, and early on they would grab another turnover. DB Malik Davenport, who they had picked up at the trade deadline, would bring in a tipped pass and give Buffalo another great opportunity. However, Louisville’s defence was starting to find a rhythm and would force Buffalo to a 2 and out. The quarter became a slow burn with neither team really gaining much ground. Eventually, a RB Rodney Clark run would get the Thunder close enough to put up a field goal, but that was all they could get, leaving the game at a low but close score of 7-3 at halftime.

3rd Q
The game continued as it was in the 2nd quarter. Both defences came away with a turnover early on with LB Orion Carter getting a fumble off of WR Sammy Moss, and DB Oliver Langstrom taking it right back with a pick on the next drive. Midway through the 3rd, things went bad for the Thunder as S Johnny Berger came up limping after making a tackle on WR Julius Drake. It made the Thunder secondary quite vulnerable, and the Blue Wings would attack it. QB Charles Lemieux would start to get into a rhythm and would eventually connect with WR Zachariah Pembroke to extend the lead to 14-3.

The Thunder were becoming desperate, the offence needed to make something happen or else it would be too late. Dumont would get a little more aggressive and would find WR Darryl Duke for a decent gain, but the Blue Wings defence was still holding strong and they would only get a field goal, but it would cut the lead to just 8. Just as Louisville was gaining some ground, the Blue Wings would take it all away. Lemieux and Golden would roll down the field with ease. Golden would then break loose for an 18-yard score to make it 21-6 with only 5 minutes to go. The Buffalo crowd was ecstatic, and the Thunder would struggle immensely to communicate throughout the rest of the game. The offence would suffer from 2 more late interceptions coming from S Wesley Jones and DB Dean Hawkins. Buffalo would cruise to their first playoff win since 1957.

It will be the duel of the league's two best running backs in the 46th McCallister Cup. Both Jimmy Golden and Dareion Fields have been at the top of their games this season with a combined 44 touchdowns between the two. They will likely be the game’s biggest factor, however, don’t count out the rest of each team most notably, the Raiders’ defence and the Blue Wings' offensive potential. Expect a close duel, but I think the Blue Wings are coming in with a slightly hotter hand.

Louisville’s defence came to play, shutting down the Tigers in the 2nd and 3rd quarter, however, the lack of offence kept the Tigers in the game.
Kiernan was able to pull off a great game-winning drive in the 4th to give the season-opening game a great finish.
Leonidas Dumont was alright in his first game back in action, but he still needs to work on his chemistry with his new WRs Sammy Moss and Darryl Duke. 
The defence was solid with 3 turnovers from DL Bjorn Sigmarsson, LB Scotty Williams, and DB Oliver Langstrom.

The Royals gave the Steelheads quite the welcome to the NAAF putting up a 13-35 win.
QB Jean Matieau seemed to be out to prove that he still has it, throwing a pair of touchdowns in his return. 
RB Corbyn Knight also had a strong game with a pair of touchdowns as well. 
The Steelheads struggled to get settled in their new rule set in the first half, but they were able to show some improvement in the second half. 
Ottawa’s defence did have a strong day with LB Douglas MacDougall grabbing a forced fumble and Jacques Gaul bringing in a late pick-6.

It was quite the shootout to kick off the season in Indiana with the Blue Wings narrowly pulling out on top behind a 3 touchdown performance from RB Jimmy Golden.
The offence was clicking for both teams, but Buffalo could have had a much higher score if it weren’t for a couple of turnovers. 
DB Kelly Kirkland managed to get an interception off of Lemieux in the first half while LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes would knock the ball loose from WR Zachariah Pembroke in the second half.

It was a Braddock-led 4th quarter comeback that closed out an exciting game between two East Division contenders. 
The star QB was able to get a late touchdown to new teammate Chester Bennett before the defence stopped Long Island and gave him a chance to go for the win with only 40 seconds left.
Overall, the Raiders looked really strong in their first game with Winters grabbing an early pick-6 and DL Pionk Bjorkkstrand getting a fumble.

The Gold Stars aimed to prove a lot of doubters wrong in their opening game putting up 34 on the Mariners.
The defence made a difference with DB Neville Falkner bringing in a pair of interceptions while DL Craig White had a forced fumble.
Besides the two interceptions, QB Buck Murphy had a solid day throwing a touchdown to WR Jav Kerrigan and getting to the endzone 3 times all day.
The defence also showed up with DB Joe Robinson bringing in an interception and DL Pat Butler getting a forced fumble as well.

Toronto improved a lot in their second game in the NAAF, however, they were no match for another strong performance on the ground from RB Jimmy Golden. 
QB Todd Baker was solid with 3 passing touchdowns but still threw an interception to S Wesley Jones (which was his first career pick). 
Buffalo looked solid throughout, cutting down on the offensive mistakes with only a single turnover in the form of LB Daniel Carpenter knocking the ball out of WR Julius Drake’s arms.

Leonidas Dumont finally found the endzone after seeming to connect with both of his new receivers in WR Darryl Duke and WR Sammy Moss. 
Boston was still strong against the tough Thunder defence, but Braddock was not able to make a late 4th quarter comeback after S Johnny Berger came away with an important interception late.
LB Calvin Hardy also grabbed a fumble for the Thunder while LB Konrad Aust had a fumble for Boston; DB Mordecai King also had a pickoff of Dumont as well for Boston.

The Rouge came out with a strong win after getting the first week off. 
Their defence had a strong day with 3 turnovers in the rain; DL Lucas Kipling, LB Sam Fitzroy, and LB Elijah Goldwater all had fumbles.
The offence was not electrifying, but they seemed in control of the game with only one turnover themselves on a fumble from LB Deon Wiggins.

It was a bit of a slow burner between the Royals and the Mariners, both sides were moving the ball, but they were unable to finish outside of the opening quarter.
The Royals had a small advantage throughout being able to get a slight upper hand offensively via their QB Jean Matieau.
QB Buck Murphy started okay, but was certainly struggling at times; he ended up throwing a pair of interceptions to DB Mingan Oliver and DB Wesley Nires. 
S Jay Shepherd of the Mariners was able to get an interception back as well as DL Wayne Baxton grabbing a fumble as well.
Unfortunately for the Royals, they would lose their rookie DB Jerome Caldwell for what could be half of the season.

The Victors had a strong 2nd quarter that gave them the lead going into the half, however, the Tigers would turn it up in the second half, scoring 3 touchdowns to grab their second win of the season. 
The Victors were able to stay in it, but DB Jackson Miles would put an end to their comeback with a strong interception on a pass intended for WR Ed Edwards.
DL William Sanderson returned to action with a forced fumble and a sack, while LB Terrence Patton also had a fumble.

Rouge came out strong against the Independents, however, they seemingly lost all momentum after the Independents scored a field goal and a touchdown in a matter of minutes. 
The biggest moment was a LB Konrad Aust hit on RB Scott Mallard-White that gave Boston the football deep in Montreal territory.
They would control the game from that point on with Braddock being able to pick apart the Montreal defence and earn their second win of the season.

The Raiders were able to get in the win column with a strong performance against the Royals.
RB Dareion Fields had himself a strong game with a pair of touchdowns leading the way on offence. 
The Royals’ offence struggled against the strong Raiders defence; DB Alexander Bradley would get an interception as well as DB Lauri Hayha, and DL Pionk Bjorkkstrand also had a forced fumble.
Ottawa had some late success with RB Corbyn Knight scoring a touchdown and QB Lee Rogers getting some action late as well.

Todd Baker had another strong game with a pair of touchdowns and Tommy Allen would grab a touchdown as well. 
It would be another frustrating game for the Victors who fall to 0-3. 
QB Lyle Painter tried to pull the team back in late, but the late Dubois touchdown was a little too late.
Toronto’s defence would come through with a strong performance as well with LB Daniel Carpenter getting a fumble and S Daniel Perry getting an interception.

The Thunder defence was able to put on a great performance against a strong Buffalo offence locking them down to only 13 points in the game. 
Louisville’s offence was strong in the second half, but Buffalo kept it close until Dumont was able to give the Thunder a late 10-point lead off of a Christopher Gist touchdown.
Buffalo still gave it a late shot, but DB Oliver Langstrom came away with an important interception to close out the game and extend Louisville’s lead.

It was a bit of a Canada Day beating for the Rouge over the Royals. 
Montreal’s offence was able to rebound after a tough week against the Independents.
Their defence would have a strong performance keeping the Royals to only 7 points in the game. 
DB Jayson Klyde and S Garet deVale each had an interception in the game for the Rouge, while LB Elijah Goldwater and LB Sam Fitzroy each had a forced fumble.
Ottawa had only one turnover from DL Olaf Viktorsson who was able to get a hand on Bishop to prevent a score in the 3rd quarter.

A bizarre situation would take place in Louisville as both starting QB’s would leave the game early. 
In the end, QB Stanislav Ovechkin and QB Rigobert St-Hilaire would duel to decide who gets the tiebreak advantage between these teams. 
Louisville made a case, even taking a late lead by 1 off of a missed field goal, however, WR Max Sutton would manage to make a huge play. 
The veteran WR would turn a 12-yard throw into a 38-yard touchdown with a great move he put on DB Jayden Mills.
Each defence had success as well with DB Jackson Miles and LB Dallas Dillard grabbing turnovers for the Tigers, while DB Oliver Langstrom and DB Elvin Waters each had a pick for the Thunder and LB Scotty Williams had a fumble.

It was quite the wake-up call for the Gold Stars who were suddenly down 20-0 at halftime against their rival Independents. 
It was their first game against a team not named the Mariners, and it showed that they may not be all they cracked up to be.
Boston had a great performance with a pair of touchdowns from Braddock against a strong Providence secondary, and their defence was able to shut down the usually prolific Gold Star offence.
DB Lawrence Ralph had a pick while both LB Brent Harper and DL Timmy Kerr had forced fumbles.

It was a shocking end in Toronto as a botched handoff ended with Toronto taking back a fumble to the house. 
DL Chester Avery was able to prevent the Blue Wings from recovering on the play and would knock the ball loose for Rusty McVee to pick up and take to the house. 
Buffalo was shocked by the loss as these two teams already seem to have created a good rivalry after a strong battle.
Toronto is also proving their worth with another win and this time against a team that people are looking at as a championship contender. 
RB Max Tracy also found his footing with a strong breakout 2-touchdown performance.

It was a big day on the ground for RB Dareion Fields who potted 3 touchdowns and 144 rushing yards.
The Raiders defence would also come in handy with a DB Lauri Hayha pick-6 which gave them the ultimate edge over the now 0-4 Victors.
It seems like Indiana just can’t find a way to win; QB Lyle Painter is facing a lot of flack despite being able to move the ball alright and keep the team in the game, but it may be time to see what QB Mike Key can do. 
The Victors will be looking over all 3 QBs over their first bye week to see where they might want to go from here.

QB Jean Matieau would give Boston a bit of a taste of their own medicine with a beautiful game-winning drive to upset the division leaders. 
Braddock’s 4th quarter comebacks have become a trend for the Independents, but Matieau showed that he is just as capable to pull it off for the Royals, giving us a classic battle between two likely legends.
It was a defensive game in the first half with the Royals grabbing a pair of turnovers from S Randall Green and LB John MacDonald. 
Boston would have their own success defensively with another LB Konrad Aust fumble and DB Lawrence Ralph interception.

Buffalo rebounded from their tough loss to the Steelheads by blowing the doors off of the Thunder.
Louisville scored first and last, but allowing 30 straight points was not ideal for staying in the game.
Buffalo’s defence got the chance to shine with DL Lonnie Vincent grabbing 2 sacks and a forced fumble and DB Erza Power Reeling in a pick.

The Steelheads pulled off yet another upset in a shootout with their southern Ontario counterpart creating the roots for a potential great rivalry.
RB Austin Andrews was able to get into the endzone for the first time in the NAAF getting a few more snaps for the Tigers.
DB Jackson Miles was able to come down with a pick, however, DB Orville Blake would quickly grab one right back for the Steelheads.
The Steelheads’ third straight win is showing that they have a team that could legitimately compete for a playoff spot this season.

An offensive duel ended with QB Gene Bishop getting the upper hand on a game-winning touchdown pass to WR Derek Cross. 
Providence was able to stick right with the Rouge, O’Rourke even managed to find all 3 of his favourite targets for touchdowns once again, however, it just wasn’t enough.
DB Neville Falkner was able to get an interception on the day, but Montreal’s defence was slightly better with DB Quentin Xavier and S Garet deVale each getting interceptions.

Dareion Fields once again led the way for the Raiders’ offence getting to the endzone twice.
RB Ronald O’Sullivan had the lone touchdown for the Mariners after getting a few more snaps late in the contest to try and give the Mariners some life.
There is potential for Halifax to make a switch to QB Michael Benedict after the 4th straight loss, as Buck Murphy hasn’t been able to get the team over the top so far.

London’s offence struggled against the Rouge defence that stepped it up against the defending champs.

QB Gene Bishop has looked really calm throughout the start of the season showing a bit of maturity as he hopes to get the Rouge back to the McCallister Cup.

Indiana made a switch at QB to Mike Key, and it did not pay off, in fact, it was a horrendous showing where the Victors turned the ball over 7 times.
Key himself had 4 interceptions before Painter was back in the game for the 4th quarter.
DB Neville Falkner had 2 of the picks while DB Cameron Taylor and S Cal Clemmons had the other 2.
LB Victor Falknersteig had a forced fumble while both DL Calias McDonough and DL Craig White had the last two.
The Gold Stars didn’t have to do too much offensively, only scoring 17-points in the game.
In the end, the Victors have a lot of questions about how the team has not only shown zero improvement but even having apparently taken a step back; it will be seen if there are any changes that come this season.

Boston rebounded from their loss to the Royals with a strong win over the Mariners.
The Mariners did start QB Michael Benedict for the first time this season, and he played alright but struggled at times against a solid performance from the Boston defence. 
RB Kendall Morgan had a solid day with 3 touchdowns, which some did not see coming from an often underrated RB. 
DB Mordecai King and DB Clinton Gates both had picks for the Independents, while DB Joe Robinson was able to steal one back for the Mariners.

The Steelheads pulled off yet another miraculous win coming back late against the Thunder.
Despite being down 13-27 in the 3rd, they would manage to come all the way back following a WR Dwayne Alexander kick-return touchdown.
Louisville was certainly not happy about the tough loss which is their 3rd straight after a strong start earlier in the season.
Toronto’s defence deserves a lot of praise for their play in the second half, limiting the Thunder to just 9 points overall.
QB Todd Baker continues to prove that he is a pretty solid QB and can tango with the rest of the NAAF starters.

The game only featured a single turnover with DB Deon Wiggins getting a forced fumble off of RB Clifford Russell.

Benedict seems to be proving to be a little better than QB Buck Murphy so far, but there is still a lot of time left in the season.
Ottawa struggled with several injuries which led to some miscommunications throughout the game.

With QB Lyle Painter back in the starting role, the Victors would be able to put an end to their winless season and surprisingly stop the Steelheads’ win streak.
Painter was a little more aggressive in the game leading to an interception, however, he didn’t let it faze him and he pulled out the big win.
Toronto looks a little flat, as it seems like they have fallen into playing at their opponents' level.
Todd Baker also struggled with a pair of interceptions and a fumble on the day.
DB Kelly Kirkland and S Tom Parrish had interceptions on the day while DL William Sanderson had the forced fumble.

RB Dareion Fields looked to keep pace with Jimmy Golden in the rushing touchdown race with 3 touchdowns in the game.
The Raider defence came up big with several turnovers from DB Alexander Bradley, LB Deon Wiggins, and DB Rutherford Winters.
Benedict struggled a lot in the game and was replaced by Buck Murphy in the 4th quarter, who struggled just as much.

Indiana got off to a strong start, but the offence was stifled in the second half by the Thunder's defence.

They dominated the game until Providence’s late touchdown in the final quarter, their defence was all over the Gold Stars.
The star was LB Konrad Aust who had a forced fumble and interception in the game while leading in tackles; teammate Brent Harper also had a forced fumble.

The Royals managed to get revenge on the Rouge in their second battle of the season.
Jean Matieau led the Royals' offence with a fantastic drive with only a minute to go in the first half and then another strong one to open the following half. 
The Rouge were able to be competitive, but they just seemed a little off in the game making a few more mistakes than normal. 
QB Gene Bishop would fumble the ball while getting tackled by DL Olaf Viktorsson, which gave the veteran a forced fumble.

1964 Week 9

TRADE ALERT
The pressure has been turned up for GM Everett Henderson of the Victors. His job could be on the line this offseason after another disappointing start. While it might be the offseason where he has to prove himself, he decided to get started a little early. Recently, the teams were told what the expansion rules were going to be for the Pittsburgh expansion draft, and of course, there were plenty of trade rumours that arose as teams might want to move players that they may not be able to or want to protect. One of those players for the Victors was WR Alexei Dubois. The former 1st Overall Pick has not been the best receiver in the last season or two, sliding down to the 3rd WR spot on the depth chart. The Victors are more likely to protect WR Ed Edwards and WR Silas Peyton instead so they began shopping Dubois. 

After many discussions over the past few weeks, their bye week would be the big moment. Over the time off, Henderson would have serious talks with GM Earnest Bryan of the Independents. They would finally come to an agreement that would send Dubois to Boston in exchange for WR Orlando Barrack and a 1965 3rd Rounder. Barrack hasn’t been what Boston was hoping for and will need a lot more time to develop so they would decide to go out and get a weapon that was ready to go now in Dubois who will be ready to fill the shoes of WR Chester Bennett who is likely to retire at the end of the season. 

The only issue for Boston was Dubois’ $19,000 cap hit which put them over the salary cap. Even with Indy retaining a portion ($7,500) they were still way over the cap. So they would send WR Paul Franklin, who was getting paid $16,000 to be the 4th string WR to the Mariners for veteran WR Ronald Vernon (this marks the 3rd time he has been traded, and the second time being traded to Boston). Franklin will be hoping to prove his worth in Halifax, likely being able to get some starting reps down the stretch.

The Mariners and Steelheads had a back-and-forth battle in Halifax’s only non-divisional match-up of the season.
Michael Benedict was back as the starter and played alright giving the Mariners a lead in the 4th.
The Steelheads would be on the back foot with QB Todd Baker leaving the game with an injury, leading to QB Christian Stewart leading the team from behind in the second half.

It was a late Ben Roland touchdown that made the difference on a bit of a dreary day in Ottawa.

QB Christian Stewart did what he could for the Todd Baker-less Steelheads, getting off to a strong start with a touchdown out of the gate, but struggled against the good Thunder defence.

The Victors came away with a huge upset over the Blue Wings who were without RB Jimmy Golden in the second half due to a minor injury.
QB Lyle Painter had a great game with a pair of touchdowns in the win and no turnovers.
The Blue Wings tried their best to stay in the game, but their offence stumbled despite having both QB Charles Lemieux and his brother RB Théodore Lemieux working together.
DL William Sanderson had another strong game as well with a forced fumble and a sack.

A stellar 4th quarter comeback from the Gold Stars led to the second overtime matchup of the week, however, this time a winner would be decided with K Maurice Lafayette being the only one to score in the final frame, completing the comeback. 
DL Craig White was a vital piece in the comeback for the Gold Stars with a fumble that allowed the Gold Stars to tie the game up.
The Raiders’ 5-game win streak comes to an end with the shocking loss as well as it pulls the field right up to basically create a fresh start for all of the competitive teams heading into the final 4 weeks of the season.

1964 Trade Deadline

The deadline week would start with a trade that had been in the works for a couple of weeks which saw Victors’ backup QB Mike Key and a 1965 5th Round Pick to the Rouge for a 1965 3rd Round Pick and a 1967 Conditional 5th Round Pick. The conditional pick will only go to Indiana if Key remains on the Rouge next season. 

Key was likely not going to be protected by the Victors and after a pretty rough showing in his lone start this season, they were more than willing to part ways. As for the Rouge, they finally have a strong backup for Gene Bishop, just in case, the QB suffers an injury down the stretch.

The Independents were looking for a slight upgrade on their OL. They felt they got the best value with a trade that brought over OL Steven Michaels from the Halifax Mariners in exchange for a 1966 4th Round Pick and OL Moses Griffin to balance the rosters.

The Rouge would make a second trade with the Victors after learning LB Sebastian Andrews III would likely miss the team’s next game. They would acquire veteran LB Wilson Rockwood Barnes from the Victors in exchange for Sebastian Andrews III and a 1966 5th Round Pick. 
The Victors are fine taking on the injured LB if it means grabbing a draft pick in the deal. 

Tuesday, August 18, 1964 - 9:41 AM ET
Early on deadline day, the Blue Wings would look to add a piece to fill in for injured DB Ezra Power. They would go to Indiana to grab their #2 DB, Malik Davenport, and 24-year-old LB Tyrone Butler in exchange for 25-year-old LB Linus Kinjerski, DB Michael Cornell III, and a 1965 4th Round Pick. 

The Blue Wings will be glad to have Davenport on the back end and potentially a younger piece for the LB core. As for the Victors, they do get a better LB in Kinjerski and more draft capital. The only question might be if the team will protect Kinjerski come the expansion draft which they will have to decide based on his play in the final few games of the season.

The next trade would end up seeing DB Dennis Kirchner get sent back to Providence for a 1966 Conditional 4th Round Pick and veteran DB Petr Westerburg. The condition on the pick would see it upgraded to a 3rd round pick if the Gold Stars get back to the McCallister Cup this season. 

Kirchner will be a decent replacement for the injured DB Cameron Taylor as he is familiar with the team’s system after playing there for 3 seasons from 1960-1962. 

Tuesday, August 18, 1964 - 4:30 PM ET
Following the acquisition of LB Linus Kinjerski, the Victors were looking to now flip LB Sebastian Andrews III who they got for LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes. They would find a suitor in the Gold Stars and would send LB Sebastian Andrews III, WR Barnaby Underwood-Zimmerman, and Boston’s 3rd Round Pick from 1965 in exchange for Providence’s 2nd Round Pick, OL Eustace Cloudwell, and LB Bastiano Cerutti.

The Gold Stars wanted some help in the LB core and grabbed Sebastian Andrews III (even though he will still miss a game yet). He should help the team in the push for the playoffs. For Indy, they get more draft capital and a young OL who was just drafted this past year.

One last trade was made just before the deadline that saw the Raiders get 32-year-old OL Charlie Bennett from the Royals for a 2nd Round Pick in 1965 and 34-year-old OL Kyle Hurst. 

Bennett will be missed in Ottawa, but the veteran will be an important piece for the Raiders and the Royals certainly could use some more youth as they go through their rebuild.

The pressure was on for QB Michael Benedict who needed to prove himself to earn the job for next season. 
He pulled through with a good performance to earn the Mariners their second win of the season. 
Boston struggled in the game surprisingly with several mistakes that led to turnovers throughout. 
DB Joe Robinson had a pick and LB Marco Price, DL Wayne Baxton, and DL Pat Butler were all able to punch the ball loose at some point for the Mariners.
This could be a crucial loss for the Independents, who are in the heat of the battle in the East.

London just did not have anything to counter the Blue Wings and are at risk of falling a step behind the playoff race in the West.

K Ira Foster had a strong day for the Royals keeping the team in the game with 3 field goals in the game. 
The Raiders offence was playing quite well with QB Stanley Troyer finding the endzone twice, however, he did throw a pick to rookie DB Jerome Caldwell which would be his career first.

The Steelheads put an end to the Thunder’s 4-game win streak with an overtime win on the road.
QB Todd Baker was the key to the win, throwing 3 touchdowns in his return to the starting lineup.
The Thunder were right in the battle, but the offence could not find the endzone in overtime, and Dumont threw an interception that pretty much sealed their fate. 
DB Luke Warren was the one with the interception for the Steelheads.
To make matters worse the Thunder now are in a very difficult spot as they now have 0 tiebreakers over the other 3 teams they are battling with for a playoff spot and have only one game left.

The Rouge earned their second straight win in a rout against the Mariners. 
QB Gene Bishop looked sharp with 3 touchdowns, before being replaced by QB Mike Key in the 4th to give their new backup some time to get used to the offence.
The defence played really well giving Halifax many problems; LB Elijah Goldwater had a forced fumble in his return, DL Lucas Kipling had one as well with S Garet deVale getting an interception along with DB Jayson Klyde.

It was an emotional night for the Royals fans, as many were thinking this might be Jean Matieau’s last game in Ottawa with the team playing their final 2 games on the road.
Matieau put on a great performance for the home crowd but came up just short of the win with the younger Lemieux leading the Blue Wings on a game-winning drive.
TE Ryan Hatcher had his first career touchdown for the Royals to give them a shot late in the game.
RB Jimmy Golden once again had a 3 touchdown performance continuing his amazing season and becoming just the 3rd RB in league history to reach at least 21 rushing touchdowns in a season.

The Raiders took home their 7th win in 8 games on the back of another strong performance from RB Dareion Fields.
Defensively the Raiders had some solid performances with DL Pionk Bjorkkstrand grabbing a fumble, and DB Rutherford Winters getting an interception; LB William Washington II also had a pick in his return to the lineup.
As for the Gold Stars, The trades that they made haven’t seemed to have helped too much, as the team did not look great in the game putting themselves in a tough position down the stretch.

It was a thrilling back and forth match between the Rouge and Raiders, that ended with an excellent Gene Bishop-led drive. 
The win gives the Rouge the top spot in the East and clinches them a playoff spot. 
The Raiders were frustrated by the loss, but they will still have a chance to clinch the division in the final week of the season.

The Steelheads came through with a huge win on the road against the Tigers to officially book their ticket to the playoffs in their first season in the NAAF. 
The loss means the Tigers face potentially being completely knocked out of contention if both Louisville and Boston win their games later in the week. 
K Bob Randall had quite the 2nd quarter nailing 3 field goals on 3 straight drives due to the Tigers defence being able to stall out the Steelhead offence. 
LB Dallas Dillard still had a strong showing for the Tigers with a forced fumble and 8 Tackles, but it wasn’t enough.

QB Buck Murphy made the QB decision a whole lot tougher for the Mariners with a stellar performance against the Gold Stars. 
It seemed like QB Michael Benedict had the advantage going into the final two games of the season, but a 2 touchdown performance from Murphy leaves the team at a complete crossroads going into the offseason.
Providence looked terrible in the first half with 3 turnovers and no points; it was only made worse with DL Wayne Baxton knocking the ball off of O’Rourke in the third which allowed DL Pat Butler to scoop the ball and score.
Providence's gamble to trade for several pieces to push for the playoffs has not paid off at all.

The Thunder were able to escape a scary situation with a defensive win over the Victors to close out their regular season. 
The Victors put up a fight with Painter continuing to show he can still play well, but he needed a little more to get a win.
Louisville’s defence did cause the Victors some trouble with LB George Yokoi grabbing a fumble and LB Scotty Williams taking in an interception.

It was potentially the last battle between Braddock and Matieau would be a touchdown fest.
In the end, Boston would get the last laugh to officially lock up the final playoff spot in the NAAF. 
There were a couple of turnovers in the game with DB Jerome Caldwell getting his second career interception for the Royals and LB Konrad Aust had a pick as well. 
A standing ovation was given out by the Boston faithful for Matieau after the game, showing their respect for the great QB.

Montreal went out during their final game of the season and claimed the East Division title with a dominant win over Halifax.
The Rouge offence played really well with Gene Bishop controlling the game and continuing his excellent season.
The Mariners were hoping for more of the same from QB Buck Murphy after last week’s strong performance, but he was not able to replicate it struggling against the Rouge defence where he threw 2 interceptions (S Garet deVale and DB Quentin Xavier).

It was the Tigers that would be the ones to help out the Buffalo Blue Wings with a revenge win over the Steelheads. 
With the Steelheads losing the Blue Wings clinched the West Division for the first time since 1957. 
RB Austin Andrews got the opportunity to start, and he would have a strong game with a pair of touchdowns.
QB Caldwell Higgins III also got an opportunity to take some snaps for his hometown team in the 4th, while QB Rigobert St-Hilaire took some in the 3rd. 
QB Todd Baker tried to get the Steelheads back into it late with a pair of touchdown passes, but it would not be enough.

The Royals would start QB Landon Ross in their final game of the season, to see what the young QB could bring to the table as a potential starter of the future. 
Ross was able to pull off the win with a game-winning touchdown to Marshall Leonard. 
Providence’s offence with QB Terry Bourbon under center was far from perfect, in fact, they turned the ball over 3 times in the game. 
DB Jerome Caldwell had yet another pick as well as DB Wesley Nires, while DL Zane Tannith had a forced fumble.

He did it, RB Jimmy Golden was able to put up 3 touchdowns in the Blue Wings’ final game of the season which would set the new record for rushing touchdowns in a season.
After he had scored twice in the first half, RB Théodore Lemieux took over for most of the second half alongside QB Jack Owens, but Golden was given a shot to break the record from 2-yards out late in the game.  
Indiana had started QB Tom Applewhite, but he didn’t last very long before taking a big hit from DL Mickey Daly that would take him out of the game leaving fellow young QB Jimm Kidd to take over.

A great game from QB Nathaniel Braddock would help give the Independents a home playoff game officially by clinching the East’s second seed.
It was a fast start for Braddock who threw touchdowns on the first two drives of the game.
The Raider struggled to recover with Boston controlling the game from that point on, they would not get anything defensively as Boston kept it clean without any turnovers.
Boston’s defence did have success with Lawrence Ralph grabbing a pick and DL Timmy Kerr getting a forced fumble.

Playoff Preview 

East Division Semi-Final - Boston Independents VS. Long Island Raiders
Head-to-Head: W1 BOS 25-24 LI, W14 LI 16-27 BOS
Boston was able to take home field in the final game of the season in the win over the Raiders. They have the momentum heading into the game, but the Raiders are certainly not going to go down without a fight. The big question for the Raiders will be if they can beat a good team since all 7 of their wins came against non-playoff teams this season. Either way, it should be a close battle based on the previous battles this season. In the end, I think the best QB will be the one to come out on top, so I’m taking Boston in this one.

West Division Semi-Final - Toronto Steelheads VS. Louisville Thunder
Head-to-Head: W6 TOR 34-33 LOU, W10 TOR 20-31 LOU, W12 LOU 23-30 TOR OT
It will be the 1st time two teams have met for a 4th time in a season in league history. Toronto had the advantage during the regular season, and they may have an advantage with playoff success with their multiple OFU titles in recent years. Louisville’s defence will need to play well, however, the game could depend more so on the offensive attack. I think the Steelheads are coming in with a chip on their shoulder and I am concerned with Louisville’s consistency, so I like the Steelheads in this one.
