1965 Free Agency Preview

1965 Free Agency Preview

This season’s free agency pool is certainly not the most game-changing, with mainly veterans being near the top, however, there are still some younger talents that will be available. DB Malik Davenport will enter his first-ever free agency window as the top target after helping the Blue Wings to a title last season. He should provide stability at a #2 or #3 option for teams. Jared Francis follows suit as a similar option, however, he is a couple of years older. LB Joe Larkin could be an interesting target as the 27-year-old is looking for a new home after the Mariners decided not to keep him protected. The LB did not get picked, but he believes the Mariners may not want him back anyway. There will be some solid offensive options for teams with QB Robert Humphrey and QB Rigobert St-Hilaire available for backup roles and WR Darryl Duke, RB Eddie Thompson, and TE Paul McDowell available as veteran pieces. There will be some younger pieces available with QB Joshua Nolan, who was a second-round pick, WR Stuart Smalls, and S Nick Dixon.

1965 Re-sign Stage

1965 Re-sign Stage

PITTSBURGH BLACKSMITHS SIGNINGS
One of the biggest questions about the offseason would be which players the Blacksmiths were going to be able to remain that were not under contract already. In the end, a majority of the players would remain with the team. The big names that would sign a new deal would be WR Jack Duncan, LB Sam Wynn, DB Ty Boone, DL Sammy Pickett and then both QB Mike Key and QB Buck Murphy. The two QBs were the biggest questions, but both signed 2-year deals which will likely see them battle it out for the starting job over the two seasons. There still were a few players that did not come to an agreement: RB Wally Morton, OL Forrest Green, and DB Evan Harris. The Blacksmiths were able to use the Expansion Tag which was introduced in 1957 for Indiana and Louisville, with a slightly different rule. The tag initially just signed a player to a 1-year deal with the team, however, this time if the player does not want to sign, then Pittsburgh at least has the chance to trade the player and get something back. All 3 have been tagged, and are expected to be moved at some point.

TROYER GETS HIS CONTRACT
With the Raiders going all the way to the McCallister Cup with QB Stanley Troyer under center, means that the QB would likely get a big payday. Troyer would not get the amount of the top QBs, but he would still get a 3-year deal worth $25,000 a season. He would also get a no-trade clause as well, which could potentially cause an issue down the line. The team still has a young QB in Matt Fletcher, who will need a contract next season. The question will be if Fletcher eventually does get to the level of being a starting quarterback, is the contract may cause an issue for the Raiders. However, the argument can be made that Troyer is the guy and they should pay to keep him.

1965 Pittsburgh Blacksmiths Expansion Draft

1965 Pittsburgh Blacksmiths Expansion Draft
With the Blacksmiths being the only team that was picking during the draft, the picks were made and then announced team by team. Pittsburgh could only select 3 players per team and only one player under 24 per team as well.

Boston Independents
Pittsburgh decided to primarily go with youth from the Independents. They would grab DL Sammy Pickett, who is a former 10th overall selection, to hopefully become the baseline for their future on the line. Then, they would also select S Peter Sellers as their under-24 pick to fill out their future on the back end. The last player they would get is LB Killian Reed, who has spent most of his career with the Royals and will be a strong veteran presence for the team out of the gate.

Buffalo Blue Wings
From the champs, the Blacksmiths would take TE Tanner Tint, who is likely going to be the team’s starter right out of the gate. The veteran TE has bounced around a lot in his career, but Pittsburgh might be the perfect home for him. They would also take a player that some were surprised to be left open in LB Sam Wynn, though he might not sign as an impending free agent. WR Moe Schafer would be the last player to be taken and will likely fill the 4th WR spot.

Halifax Mariners
Seeing that the Mariners would protect QB Michael Benedict, it meant that QB Buck Murphy would be available and to no surprise, the Blacksmiths would take the 26-year-old to fight for the starting job. However, likely the best player they would grab is RB Stavros Black who is likely the leading candidate for the starting RB spot and the team’s first captain. While the Mariners will miss him, they still will have the younger RB Ronald O’Sullivan to take on the starting role. The last player taken was last year’s 11th overall pick, WR Nathan Murray-Lawrence, which would be a tough loss for the Mariners and could be a good young piece for Pittsburgh

Indiana Victors
From Indy, the Blacksmiths were going to start building their O-line by taking Benedict Benedicto, a 26-year-old, just getting into his prime. They would then grab S Calvin Hobbes who is likely going to be the starter going into the season. Then the most interesting pick was QB Magnus Torrensen. The 24-year-old could have the potential to be a starter down the line if he continues to develop at a steady rate.

London Tigers
The Tigers had some tough decisions to make, and they had chosen WR Russell Wilcox to protect over WR Jack Duncan, which would lead to their #2 WR being taken by the Blacksmiths. Duncan, if he re-signs, could be the team’s #1 WR. They would also grab a couple of solid pieces in OL Jimmy McKay and LB Red Clarkson who should both be strong foundational pieces for the future.

Long Island Raiders
From the Raiders, the Blacksmiths would grab more reinforcements for the O-line with OL Wally McRose. Then they would solidify their WR core with WR Wilson Queensgate, who has quietly been real solid for the Raiders. Finally, they would also grab a RB of the future with 24-year-old Carter Roy who could potentially be a future starter.

Louisville Thunder
The Thunder might have been one of the toughest teams to figure out what to take, but they would start by taking OL Forrest Green who is a risky pick since he is without a contract but could be a vital piece in the lineup. They would then add to the defence with DL Theo Conte and DB Elvin Waters. Both players should add a lot of depth to their respective positions.

Montreal Rouge
The Blacksmiths would take their 3rd and final QB from the Rouge. QB Mike Key was often pinned as the likely player that Pittsburgh would target as their first starter. At this point he is likely to battle with Buck Murphy for the spot, barring that both players sign with the team. They would also take aggressive DL Dexter Barbarcos to add some ferocity to the line and then a young DB Ty Boone to add to their future.

Ottawa Royals
The toughest loss for the Royals will likely be DB Jacques Gaul, who they had hoped would be a leader on the back end into their new era, however, he will be headed to Pittsburgh to hopefully still do the same thing. Pittsburgh would also grab DL Howard Grant and OL Calvin Forman to strengthen both of their lines.

Providence Gold Stars
A couple of potentially key pieces would be picked up from the Gold Stars with WR Ben Roland, who will likely be the deep threat for the team initially, and RB Wally Morton, who could be a great #2 to Stavros Black. They would go with youth on their final pick, taking 25-year-old DL Steve Hamm

Toronto Steelheads
The last 3 picks from the Steelheads would be OL Christopher Weeks to officially put together an O-line that will have 5 of 6 players already under contract. DB Evan Harris could be one of the best DB’s they have if he sticks with the team. Then they would grab youth with LB Oscar Wilkins

SUMMARY
Pittsburgh did a good job picking a younger team that could easily find a grove this season and be in the mix for playoff football. They will likely still have to make some changes ahead of the season, but they look strong. They also went for the strategy of taking players who are still under contract to make maintaining the pieces a lot easier.

1965 Expansion Draft Protection Lists

1965 Expansion Draft Protection Lists
The teams released their expansion draft protection lists. Each team protected the max 16 players using all 4 of their under 24 protections. There were a few surprising protections and players left available who could be quite risky to dangle. Many teams figure the Blacksmiths will be trying to grab younger players so they leaned into protecting the younger crew, which does leave some veterans available, but that may work in their favour.

1965 Coaching Changes

1965 Coaching Changes

PITTSBURGH BLACKSMITHS
The big question initially would be who would the Blacksmiths bring in to fill in the staff ahead of the upcoming expansion draft. They would first hire their GM in Cooper Ellington. Ellington was an assistant GM within the Boston Independents organization that Owner William Braddock had met while watching his son play. He thought Ellington was bright and would be the perfect fit for a GM role in Pittsburgh.

After that, the team would search for a head coach and they would land on Providence Offensive Coordinator Ted McMahon. McMahon had been looked at as a future head coach in the league with a great offensive mind that has helped QB Connor O’Rourke find lots of success. As for their own Offensive Coordinator, they would bring in Fredrick Quincy out of Detroit, MI, with lots of experience in college, and then they would grab Jerome Morris, who had previously had experience as DC with the Thunder and Gold Stars but had never really caught on for more than a year or two.

OTTAWA ROYALS
The Royals would end up keeping HC Joseph Curry, however, they would make a change at Offensive Coordinator letting go of Kent Winters and replacing him with Jean Matieau. It had apparently been in the works for a while that they would likely make the change if Matieau retired. The former QB was as much of an OC as Winters was last season, and he was helping call plays during the last couple of games of the season last year. Matieau has one of the best offensive minds the league has ever seen and he is likely going to have a very successful coaching career.

HALIFAX MARINERS
Halifax would keep most things the same, but they would make a change at OC, dropping Wayne Ball following his lack of success in developing the team’s two young QBs (Buck Murphy and Michael Benedict). They would hire Alfred Deniau to replace him, who was a head coach for the Quebec City Rams of the Eastern Canadian Semi-Pro Football League. Deniau was a great offensive mind and was excited to be back in the Maritimes to coach.

MONTREAL ROUGE
One of the more surprising moves saw the Montreal Rouge and GM Virgil Gross part ways. The new ownership in Montreal seemed to want to take a new approach into the future. They would promote from within and make Martin Gagneaux the new GM. The former head of scouting was a lot calmer and more patient with his actions so they hope he keeps some more consistency with the team.

BOSTON INDEPENDENTS & INDIANA VICTORS
There were a couple of swaps that happened between Boston and Indiana. Boston would decide to drop OC Malachi Knowles and DC Carroll Moss after several disappointing playoff exits. Indiana would also drop both OC Jack Dorsey and DC Arnold Baker for obvious reasons. Boston would end up hiring Arnold Baker as the new DC, Baker is most known for leading the late 50’s Long Island defence which was one of the best in the league’s history. Indiana would then hire Malachi Knowles as their new OC. The former OL had been the OC in Boston for 8 seasons and will be ready for a new challenge.

The other replacements would be new faces with Boston bringing in Lou Granger from a local college, Granger has some great potential as a great offensive mind. As for Indiana, they would bring on a coach out of Chicago in Johnathan Fox who might be one of the best coaches who finally wants to take a stab at professional ball.

PROVIDENCE GOLD STARS
The final piece of the puzzle would be the Gold Stars new OC after the team had lost Ted McMahon to the Blacksmiths. They would end up grabbing Jack Dorsey from the Victors after their bid for Malachi Knowles fell through.

1965 Retirements

1965 Retirements

QB Jean Matieau - Ottawa, ON - Creator: Wallflower
Teams: Ottawa Royals (1949-1964)
Captaincy: OTT - C (1957-1964)
McCallister Cups: 4 (1954,1955,1956,1959)
Award: 3 Most Valuable Player (1952,1955,1958), 2 Offensive Player of the Year (1954,1962), Breakout Player of the Year (1952), 2 Playoff MVP (1955, 1956), 3 McCallister Cup MVP (1955,1956,1959)
All-Stars: 7 (1952, 1954, 1955, 1958, 1959, 1960, 1962)
The greatest player in league history. It’s really hard to argue with that statement. No player has as many awards as Matieau (11), and on top of that, he has 7 all-stars and 7 McCallister Cup appearances with 4 wins. Unfortunately, his historic career that featured a record-setting 30 passing touchdown season (which was in his first full year as a starter), was likely cut short following a major injury suffered in 1963. He was able to come back for one more season and had the Royals in the fight, but he was clearly not his old self. He will walk away as the best to ever do it, but the question will be, will there be another that can match him.

OL Cliff Strautzenberger - Cheesequake, NJ - Creator: Dan O’Mac
Drafted: 1953 WOR - Round 1, Pick 2
Teams: Worcester Athletics (1953-1961), Montreal Rouge (1961), Louisville Thunder (1962-1963), Buffalo Blue Wings (1964)
McCallister Cups: 2 (1962, 1964)
All-Stars: 8 (1954, 1956-1962)
A long-time staple in the Athletics offensive line, a leader, and just a fun guy. Strautzenberger was a great player throughout his career, consistently getting all-star nods.
He never was able to win with the Athletics, but he managed to come out on top after spending time with both the Thunder and Blue Wings where he won a title with each team.

OL Ulysses Fairgrove - New Haven, CT - Creator: Darknes
Drafted: 1953 ON - Round 1, Pick 3
Teams: Ontario/London Tigers (1953-1962), Providence Gold Stars (1963), Buffalo Blue Wings (1964)
McCallister Cups: 2 (1960, 1964)
All-Stars: 6 (1957-1961,1963)
Fairgrove was quite a personality with the Tigers throughout his career, being a long-term lock-in on the offensive line. He was a part of the team’s first championship-winning team in 1960 but had missed out on the second while playing against the Tigers in 1963. He did get a second title with the Blue Wings this season after reuniting with fellow retiree OL Kazimir Smirnov.

WR Ellis Lindholm - Rochester, NY - Creator: Darknes
Drafted: 1953 BOS - Round 1, Pick 7
Teams: Boston Independents (1953-1964)
McCallister Cups: 1 (1961)
All-Stars: 5 (1957-1961)
Lindholm’s injuries seemed to finally catch up with the veteran this season, and with WR Chester Bennett having a steller bounceback year, he felt his time was up with the team. He decided it was time to hang them up, and he was satisfied having won the Cup in 1961.
DB Mingan Oliver - Sept-Îles, QC - Creator: Darknes
Drafted: 1953 OTT - Round 2, Pick 14
Teams: Ottawa Royals Res. (1953), Ottawa Royals (1954-1964)
McCallister Cups: 4 (1954, 1955, 1956, 1959)
All-Stars: 5 (1957, 1959, 1960, 1962, 1963)
A strong leader within the Royals organization, Oliver continued to deliver throughout his career. He was always finding ways to make plays and get his team going which heavily contributed to the team’s massive success throughout the 1950s. In the last few seasons, he has taken a bigger leadership role and helped some younger players take on bigger roles, he sees that his time has come and will be stepping away from the game.
DB Slay Mitchell - Providence, RI - Creator: Captain Mort 3D
Drafted: 1953 HAR - Round 1, Pick 3
Teams: Hartford/Long Island Hawks/Long Island Raiders (1952-1961), Providence Gold Stars (1962-1964)
McCallister Cups: 1 (1958)
All-Stars: 4 (1955, 1957-1959)
A player that looked a little disappointing in his first couple of seasons, Mitchell finally broke through in 1955 and became a star DB for the Raiders. He would help them win the title in 1958, before joining his hometown team in 1962 to go for a title. They came close in 1963, but unfortunately, his goal was unsuccessful in the end.

OL Charlie Bennett - Hamilton, ON - Creator: ZO82
Drafted: 1954 OTT - Round 3, Pick 17
Teams: Ottawa Royals Res. (1954), Ottawa Royals (1955-1964), Long Island Raiders (1964)
McCallister Cups: 3 (1955, 1956, 1959)
All-Stars: 4 (1957-1960)
Certainly a late bloomer, but a good one. Bennett was the anchor on the Royals O-line throughout his career. The team loved him and he played up until his final few games when he was sent off to the Raiders. While Bennett didn’t love the move, he was more thankful when the team made it to the McCallister Cup.

DL Dee Floyd - Nassau County, NY - Creator: Captain Mort 3D
Drafted: 1953 ON - Round 4, Pick 27
Teams: Ontario Tigers Res. (1953-1954), Ontario/London Tigers (1955-1963), Montreal Rouge (1964)
McCallister Cups: 2 (1960, 1963)
All-Stars: 2 (1956, 1957)
It’s always interesting to see if a player may rise out of the 4th round. Dee Floyd was not expected to be much, but once he made his mark on the Tigers D-line, he was a great player. He had a couple of great seasons in ‘56 and ‘57, before becoming a member of one of the toughest D-line’s the league has seen that helped to win a pair of titles for the Tigers.

K Donald Brewer - Warwick, RI - Creator: Wallflower
Teams: Buffalo Blue Wings (1951-1961), Louisville Thunder (1962), Amateur Team (1963-1964)
McCallister Cups: 3 (1952, 1957, 1962)
Awards: Special Teams Player of the Year (1954)
All-Stars: 1 (1954)
Brewer has not played in the NAAF for the last couple of seasons, but since he was once a STPOY award. He deserves to be recognized. Brewer was a staple for the Blue Wings for 11 seasons, before joining the Thunder for a championship run in 1962.

OL Moses Griffin - Burlington, VT - Creator: Captain Mort 3D
Drafted: 1954 LI - Round 2, Pick 15
Teams: Long Island Hawks/Raiders (1954-1963), Boston Independents (1964), Halifax Mariners (1964)
McCallister Cups: 1 (1958)
All-Stars: 1 (1958)
Griffin was a great lineman for the Raiders, being a leader on the line over a developing period in the mid-to-late 50s. He helped a lot of the other youngsters like OL Elliot Winterbottom, that would lead the team to a title in 1958.

Other Notable Players
OL Kazimir Smirnov - Queens, NY - Creator: ZO82 - Drafted: 1954 ON R1: P3 - Teams: R.ON (1954), ON/LDN (1955-1961)*, BUF (1962-1964)*

1965 Logo and Uniform Updates

1965 Logo and Uniform Updates

MONTREAL ROUGE

It was announced last offseason with the new ownership led by Alvon Martineau, the team would be refreshing the brand over the next few seasons. They ended up coming to a final decision on the brand earlier than expected and were ready to make the change this season.

For many years, the team had simply had a script logo for the team, so they wanted to create a proper logo to represent the team. They ended up with a simple fleur de lis with an “M” on top. A much more solid logo to really make the Rouge a much stronger brand.

They also decided to make some more heavy changes to the uniforms than some were not expecting. The new-look features the new logo on the classic red helmet. The home jersey is pretty much the same except for two thin white stripes, marking the first time the team has had striping on their red jersey. The red socks match the striping, while the silver pants remain, but with a new red and white stripe. The Roads use the same helmet, pants and socks, but the new jersey sees a vest style with red sleeves and a white jersey.

PROVIDENCE GOLD STARS

Following their 50th anniversary season that had the team put their 50-star logo on the helmet, the Gold Stars decided to maintain the additional star on each side of the helmet, except using the star with a “P” from their primary logo.

Introducing the Pittsburgh Blacksmiths

Introducing the Pittsburgh Blacksmiths

Following the league meetings, William Braddock would finally reveal the brand for his new team: The Pittsburgh Blacksmiths.

The name was selected for two main reasons: to appeal to the established Hammers fan base with a steelwork related name that shows that the team is still the team for the fans, as well as appealing to the steelwork industry of which the team's main financial partner of Marshall Steelworks resides. There is also a sense from some fans and people in the NAAF, that the name takes a shot at the Hammers, being that a blacksmith uses a hammer to forge weapons. It’s almost like the team is using the Hammers to forge a new path in the NAAF.

As for the look of the team, they would look to maintain the classic black design that the Hammers typically use, but refreshing it with a fiery orange colour to represent burning metal.

The logo is an anvil, the classic workstation for a blacksmith with a “P” symbol within a square that is heat pressed/branded into the side of the anvil. The alternate logo is simply the “P” symbol on its own, which will appear on the helmet, and then the wordmark which is to be in the same style as the heat-pressed symbol.

The uniforms certainly took on a unique design with a classic style black helmet with orange stripes and the “P” logo on the side. Then a black jersey with stencil number font, however, the unique design is the heat-pressed square that surrounds the numbers acting as the only striping on the jersey. White pants with an orange and black stripe and then black socks with orange stripes round out the jersey. The road simply makes the jersey white with the inside of the number patches being black instead of also being white.

Would love to hear everyone’s thoughts!
