1962 Playoffs

1962 Division Semi-Finals

EAST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL
Ottawa Royals VS. Montreal Rouge - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - September 16, 1962 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy - 14ºC | 58ºF

1st Q
The Royals-Rouge rivalry has always been one of the best in the league, and another meeting in the playoffs made for more prime football. Early on, the defence was the ones with the most power with both sides putting a stop to many of the early offensive chances. DL Olaf Viktorsson was able to get to Montreal QB Gene Bishop and attempt to bring him down. Bishop would seem to break free, but then DL Troy Hunt came in with a big hit which forced the ball loose. The Rouge would recover, but that certainly made the team a little more aggressive in retaliation. Their own defence would then step up and put pressure on Ottawa QB Jean Matieau and they would force him into taking a bad sack setting up the Rouge at mid-field. RB Scott Mallard-White, who had a rough start to the season, was able to lead the Rouge offence down to the endzone and would punch in the first score of the game.
OTT 0-7 MTL

2nd Q
Montreal’s momentum carried into the second quarter with Mallad-White continuing to have his way with the Royals’ defence. He continued to run the ball down their throat en route to his second touchdown of the game. The Royals were getting desperate after falling behind 0-14. However, QB Jean Matieau would keep the team calm. He would masterfully lead the Royals back down the other way to get into scoring range. Montreal was still piling on the pressure, but Matieau continued to remain composed and would eventually fire a perfect shot to WR Mackenzie to cut Montreal’s lead in half.
OTT 7-14 MTL

3rd Q
The second half is where the game started to pick up the pace. Jean Matieau and the Royals would be the first on the board in the second-half following a strong drive that would end with a field goal from K Maurice Lafayette. Montreal would look to try some different things on defence to try and kill the Royals’ momentum that they gained in the first half. The more aggressive strategy would pay off with DL Hubert Tessier getting into the backfield and forcing QB Jean Matieau to make a mistake. Matieau would get his throw off, but it wobbled through the air, short of WR Chester Bennett, and DB Quentin Xavier would easily take the ball and give Montreal possession in Ottawa territory. They would continue to lead with their run-game and RB Scott Mallard-White would continue to deliver and would score his 3rd touchdown of the game. Despite the extra pressure, the Royals bounced back from the turnover. Matieau would connect with WR Chester Bennett to get into the redzone before RB Alexei Volkov would score to make it 17-21.
OTT 17-21 MTL

4th Q
The defences seemed to disappear in the final quarter. The Rouge adjusted to a more aggressive offensive attack and QB Gene Bishop was all for it. The QB would lead the Rouge in an early 4th quarter drive that would set up the team deep in Ottawa territory. Montreal was able to extend the lead with Bishop finding WR Taylor Karis for the touchdown. Ottawa had to begin to play with more urgency with the time starting to become scarce. With the pressure rising, Matieau remained calm for the Royals and would get the offence moving down the field. He would connect on the pass after pass getting the Royals back into scoring range. He would find WR Mackenize Jones for his second touchdown of the game, cutting the lead to only 5 after the Royals were stopped on the 2-point conversion. Despite having control over the entire game, Montreal was unable to maintain possession as the Royals finally managed to shut down RB Scott Mallard-White. The Royals would get the ball back and QB Jean Matieau would once again manage the offence and the clock with precision. The veteran QB was able to get the Royals down to the redzone with just over a minute remaining. He would get them down to the goal line before hitting TE Jervonte Howell for the go-ahead touchdown. The Royals would once again go for the 2-point convert and they would connect this time with WR Mackenzie Jones getting open. Montreal had limited time to try and tie the game. There was frustration from the Rouge following their 11-point lead being erased. Frustration usually got to QB Gene Bishop, however, he decided to shake it off and just go out there and make something happen. He would lead the Rouge back down the field in order to get into range for K Arthur Kettinger. Kettinger would set up and would nail the kick with seconds on the clock sending the game to overtime.
OTT 31-31 MTL

Overtime
Both offences would be a lot slower at the start of the overtime period leading to several stalled drives. Midway through the quarter, the Royals would be the first to make a strong push. QB Jean Matieau would manage to find WR Chester Bennett for a 27-yard play that would lead to a field goal in order to give the Royals a 34-31 lead. Montreal would look to bounce back, but the Royals were able to hold them off. As time was beginning to wind down to 3 minutes left, the Rouge would aim to make a strong push. QB Gene Bishop would lead the Rouge down the field but would run into heavy pressure from the Royals. Once the Rouge got over half, the Royals would put even more pressure on forcing Bishop to scramble. The QB would manage to get loose and would fire a deep shot to WR Derek Cross who made the catch down at the Royals 8. A couple of plays later, the Bishop would once again find himself on the run. While still running he would flip a pass over LB Alister Henry and into the hands of WR Taylor Karis for the touchdown, giving Montreal the lead. The Royals would still have time to make a comeback, but they would be stopped and the Rouge would hold on for their first playoff win since 1953.

WEST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL
Louisville Thunder VS. Boston Independents - Thunder Stadium - September 16, 1962 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Clear - 23ºC | 74ºF

1st Q
The West Division Semi-Final was certainly not where the Thunder hoped to be by the end of a season that they so heavily dominated. There certainly was a weird feeling about this game from the team. Some players felt like this game was over before it began. It might have even felt that way when Boston would gift them the ball early in the opening quarter. QB Randy Sellers mishandled a handoff to RB Kendall Morgan and as he tried to pick it up DL Theo Conte would hit him out of the way. Conte would grab the ball and give Louisville the ball deep in Boston territory. It wouldn’t take too long for RB Rodney Clark to punch in the first score of the game to make it 7-0 Louisville. The Thunder seemed contempt with their 7-0 lead and were very relaxed in the playoff game.
LOU 7-0 BOS

2nd Q
The Thunder would eventually get the ball moving on offence in the second quarter with RB Rodney Clark getting around a few Independent defenders to pick up 21-yards. A few plays later the Thunder would add to their lead to make it 10-0. At this point, the Thunder were starting to play as if they had already won the game, even though HC Emil Riddle reminded them that the game was far from over. Boston would look to prove that with RB Kendall Morgan exploding out of the backfield for his own monster 34-yard gain. They would inch the ball closer before K Johnnie Berg would get them on the board 10-3.
LOU 10-3

3rd Q
Boston kept up the pressure and even turned it up on defence with LB Brent Harper managing to get his hands in the arms of RB Rodney Clark and knock the ball loose. LB Marco Price would recover giving Boston another chance. K Johnnie Berg would cut the lead to 4 a few plays later. LB Scotty Williams was not impressed with the younger players getting too relaxed and he took action with some motivation on the sidelines. It seemed to kick start the defence who did not allow Boston to move the ball much at all, however, the offence might have begun to panic a little under some of the pressure. They made a strong drive but only came away with a single point after K Donald Brewer missed a 34-yard kick.
LOU 11-6 BOS

4th Q
The true wake-up call for the Thunder offence after another turnover when QB Leonidas Dumont tossed a pick to DB Lawrence Ralph. The Independents would capitalize again with another field goal to cut the lead to only 2. On the ensuing Thunder drive, Riddle would take team captain QB Leonidas Dumont out of the game to send a message to his team. QB Stanislav Ovechkin would take over for an okay drive. On the next drive, he would let Dumont return to the game after having a talk with the young QB. With motivation from his coach, Dumont would refocus and lead the Thunder down the field. It was a stellar drive that ended with Dumont connecting with WR Clyde McIntosh to score a touchdown and give the Thunder a 2-score lead. The Louisville defence would keep up their strong play and they would stall out the Independents for the rest of the game and they would hold on for the win and a visit to London next week.

1962 Division Finals Preview
East Division Final - Providence Gold Stars VS. Montreal Rouge
Head-to-Head: W4 PRO 35-13 MTL, W12 MTL 35-20 PRO

It’s tough to get a read on the Gold Stars and Rouge matchups since both their games came when at least one team was not playing at their best. Their first meeting was during Montreal’s early struggles while the second featured a Providence squad resting their players. Montreal comes in as the hottest team in the league winning their last 6 games. However, Providence has made it very clear that they are aiming for the top this season and will be fighting tooth and nail for a shot at the Cup this season. Both teams have formidable offences, and each defence is just as strong. I would give Montreal the advantage on offence, but the Gold Stars have the stronger defence, especially in the secondary. It is honestly a toss-up, but I will stick with my original prediction at the start of the season and go with the Gold Stars in this one.
My Pick: Gold Stars

West Division Final - London Tigers VS. Louisville Thunder
Head-to-Head: W2 LDN 10-14 LOU, W12 LOU 29-30 LDN

The Tigers had just barely pulled off their heist for the West Division title in the final week of the season which will certainly give them some momentum heading into the rematch with the Thunder. However, the Thunder are aiming to take back what was “stolen” and be the West Division representative in the McCallister Cup. Both of these teams have easily been the best all season long, so both teams feel that this will be their toughest challenge. The Tigers are aiming for their 4th straight McCallister Cup to join both Boston and Ottawa as the lone teams to achieve such a feat, while the Thunder will aim to be the first of the ‘57 expansion teams to get to the final. It’s going to be a thrilling game. I will still stick with the Thunder from my pre-season predictions and take them in this battle.

1962 Division Finals

EAST DIVISION FINAL
Providence Gold Stars VS. Montreal Rouge - New Providence Stadium - September 23, 1962 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy - 16ºC | 61ºF

1st Q
The last time these two teams met in the playoffs was back in the 1953 McCallister Cup, which happens to be the last time either team had played in the big game. Both were hoping to finally make a return after almost a decade. Montreal was the first to get on the board in the opening quarter. RB Scott Mallard-White was taking advantage of some of the injuries the Gold Stars had on the D-line and was able to get Montreal into field goal range to go up 0-3. Providence would not let the early score shake them as QB Connor O’Rourke would get the ball moving back down the other way. Eventually, RB Marcus Devonshire would give Providence their first lead on an 8-yard touchdown run.
PRO 7-3 MTL

2nd Q
Montreal continued to put up pressure on the ground with RB Scott Mallard-White. The running back seemed to be unstoppable on the ground. Eventually, the Rouge would get into the redzone and QB Gene Bishop would make an excellent throw to WR Taylor Karis that would then set up Mallard-White for a touchdown to retake the lead. Providence would once again counter with their own strong drive. Using a heavy air attack, O’Rourke was able to slowly move the ball down the field. From 22 yards out, O’Rourke would look to toss a shot to WR Cedric Peterson in the endzone. Despite the effort from S Garet deVale, Peterson was able to bring it in to return the lead to Providence.
PRO 14-10 MTL

3rd Q
The second half would kick the game into a new gear with the Gold Stars making an early mistake. Connor O’Rourke would look to make a quick pass to WR Sammy Moss on a quick out route. DB Quentin Xavier read the play perfectly and jumped all over the route. The DB had a clear shot at the endzone, but he stumbled just after making the interception. Providence defence would minimize the damage by forcing them to a field goal. 14-13 Providence. The Gold Stars would recover from their earlier mistake by forcing the Rouge to make one themselves. DB Neville Falkner would grab a pick off of QB Gene Bishop after the Gold Stars sent LB Rusty McVee in on the blitz. The Gold Stars would turn the turnover into a touchdown with O’Rourke finding WR Cedric Peterson for his second touchdown of the game. Now down by 8, the Rouge would make a push as the quarter was coming to a close. They continued to roll heavily on the ground with RB Scott Mallard-White, but QB Gene Bishop was throwing the ball a lot more. The mix of plays would put Montreal down in the redzone again and they would get to the endzone on a cross route to WR Derek Cross to cut the lead to 2. The Gold Stars would be able to stop the Rouge on their 2-point conversion attempt and maintain the 2-point lead.
PRO 21-19 MTL

4th Q
The crowd in Providence was certainly in the game now as their team headed into the final quarter with a slim lead. They were hoping to help their team in creating communication issues for the Rouge, however, Montreal was able to overcome the noise early on. Mallard-White continued to run the ball with lots of success which helped the Rouge maintain tempo. They would drive deep into Providence territory, however, the Gold Stars’ defence was able to stop them. Montreal would settle with a field goal to take the lead. Providence would take over and they would turn the loud crowd into fuel. Connor O’Rourke was able to meticulously lead the Gold Stars down the field. The drive took a huge chunk of the clock off the board with several 2nd downs that the Gold Stars were forced to convert. In the end, the Gold Stars were able to retake the lead with K Ira Foster nailing a 28-yard field goal. Montreal would take over with the clock running low. They would be forced to throw the ball more to conserve the clock. Bishop would connect on a pair of passes that got Montreal back-to-back first downs. Providence would look to tighten up, but Montreal kept on moving. They inched closer to the endzone and Bishop would aim to take a shot for the score. Bishop would roll out and the play would start to shape and he saw WR Derek Cross, however, he missed DB Neville Falkner lurking with S Shawn Jensen. Bishop would throw into the double coverage and Shawn Jensen would come down with the interception. The crowd was ecstatic. Bishop was not happy with the play slamming his helmet. Providence would look to run as much of the clock as possible. The Rouge would be able to stop RB Marcus Devonshire just short of the sticks on first down, so the Gold Stars would look to run again on second down. O’Rourke would look to take the snap from OL Herman Mecklenburg, who had shifted to center with the injury to OL Wilfred Gibson, but it did not go smoothly. O’Rourke was able to get control of the ball, but the timing was way off. He would look to hand it to RB Marcus Devonshire, but S Garet deVale, who was sent in on the safety blitz would interrupt the exchange and knock the ball loose. DL Hubert Tessier would recover and the Rouge would take over. The crowd completely changed as Bishop came onto the field with a second chance. A couple of plays later, Bishop would be a little more patient with his WRs, and he would fire a shot to WR Derek Cross. Cross this time was able to get a little bit of space and would come down with the eventual game-winner.

WEST DIVISION FINAL
London Tigers VS. Louisville Thunder - Western Fair Stadium - September 23, 1962 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy - 14ºC | 58ºF

1st Q
There were many concerns surrounding the Thunder heading into the West Division Final after their lackluster performance against the Independents in the previous game. However, they came out of the gate looking to disrupt the Tigers immediately. QB Riley Kiernan was unable to get comfortable in the pocket with the Thunder sending a lot of pressure while locking down the WRs. The Tigers were expecting the pressure, but they still couldn’t avoid mistakes with Kiernan throwing an interception to DB Oliver Langstrom early. The Thunder offence ran into their own issues facing the Tigers’ defence but still managed to get into field goal range and take a 0-3 lead.
LDN 0-3 LOU

2nd Q
In the second quarter, the Thunder kept pushing on defence which ultimately led to many 2 and outs from the Tigers. Despite having a lot of possession time, the Thunder were struggling to break the Tigers’ line. Dumont would be able to lead the offence to two more field goals in the quarter, but also had his own mistake with an interception thrown to DB Jackson Miles while deep in Tigers’ territory. Frustration would start to mount on the Tigers’ sideline with the team being shut down on all counts in the first half of football. LB Scotty Williams was their biggest issue, being unable to move the ball past him on the ground or through the air.
LDN 0-9 LOU

3rd Q
The Tigers would look to make some adjustments in the second half to try and kick start the offence, however, the Thunder defence remained strong and forced the Tigers into more errors. This time WR Ronald Macquire was unable to hold onto the ball he had just received and lost it on a big hit from LB Calvin Hardy. Louisville would get the ball and they would turn it around with their offence focusing on a bigger balance between run and pass. The adjustment would lead to the first touchdown of the game with RB Rodney Clark breaking through into the endzone to extend their lead to 0-16. The Tigers were able to recover from the turnover with a strong offensive counter. QB Riley Kiernan looked like a man on a mission on the drive following the Thunder score. He slowly found small weaknesses in Louisville’s defence and was able to get the Tigers all the way down the field. He would eventually connect with WR Jack Duncan to get down to the 3-yard line. Then, he would find WR Ronald Macquire who would score the touchdown, earning a bit of redemption for his earlier mistake. The Tigers would tack on the 2-point conversion with RB Clifford Russell to make it a one-score game.
LDN 8-16

4th Q
Momentum had shifted to the Tigers heading into the final quarter. Kiernan would continue to move the ball well with the Tigers’ offence. They would get deep into Thunder territory and were threatening for a touchdown. However, S Johnny Berger would quickly steal the momentum with a timely interception. Kiernan was trying to go for WR Russell Wilcox over the top, but Berger would read it and jump the route. The interception would be a major blow to the Tigers who struggled to recover while Louisville’s defence would feed off of it and play even better. The Thunder offence would also feed on the momentum and would get into scoring range themselves. Dumont would get down inside the 10 and would take a shot at the endzone. However, DB Jackson Miles would be able to knock the ball away from WR Ben Roland. On second down, the Thunder would then go to RB Rodney Clark out of the backfield. DL Olympus Heights would get into the backfield to tackle Clark. Clark was prepared and would bounce off of the tackle and then take in the ball for a 6-yard touchdown to give Louisville a 15-point lead. London would try to get the ball moving over the last few minutes, but they would continue to be stopped by the Thunder defence. S Johnny Berger brought in a second interception on a last-ditch throw from Kiernan trying to make anything happen. The Thunder would hold them off to shock the Tigers and would earn a ticket to their first McCallister Cup in franchise history.

44th McCallister Cup Preview

Louisville Thunder VS. Montreal Rouge
Head-to-Head: W4 LOU 26-14 MTL

For the first time since 1954, it will be two brand new teams meeting in the McCallister Cup. The Thunder will enter the game as the home seed and the home team, with the game being at their own Thunder Stadium making for the 7th time, out of 11, that the host team makes it to the championship game. The Thunder have been arguably the best team all season and have brought a lot of momentum from their big win over London. However, they will be taking on one of the hottest teams in the league. They are on the back of 7 straight wins and have been able to overcome a lot this season. The Rouge could be the biggest challenge yet and this game could come down to the wire. In the end, the Thunder are just overall a better team and the likely winner, but if the Rouge continue to do what they have over the last 7 weeks, they certainly could come out on top.
My Pick: Thunder

The Gold Stars opened up their season by spoiling the Independents season opener.
O’Rourke led the team to a pair of TDs in the second half with help from a DB Neville Falkner interception.
Boston had a strong first half, but the offence sputtered in the second and a pair of turnovers allowed the Gold Stars to build their 9-point lead.
Braddock tried to will the team back to a win with a late touchdown, but it was not enough to top their rivals.

He threw a touchdown while RB Cody Barnes took in his first as a Victor.
However, the Tigers ultimately played better with Kiernan throwing a pair of TDs to WR Max Sutton.
The defence was still able to get to Troyer in the backfield with DL Richard Blunt getting a forced fumble and DL Olympus Heights grabbing a sack.
The team did suffer a major loss with an injury to captain LB Aengus Lynch which will leave him out for about half the season.

Buffalo would recover in the second, but the Thunder offence turned up the heat behind RB Johnnie Stafford, who was in relief for RB Rodney Clark.
Lemieux had a late touchdown, but the Thunder were giving in and held on for their first win of the season.

28-27 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Derek Cross

The Raiders were slow out of the gate with their new coaching staff, but they seemed to click a bit in the second half and got out to a 27-21 lead.
RB Dareion Fields had a strong game with a touchdown and 112 rushing yards.
In contrast, the Rouge started the game really strong before the Raiders were able to claw their way back into the game.
QB Gene Bishop would lead the team on a strong final drive in order to take back the lead with only a minute to go in the game.

QB Jean Matieau would have a strong 3 touchdown performance in the win, and rookie RB Corbyn Knight would score as well in the 4th breaking loose on a 2nd and 2 from 18 yards out.
The Athletics would keep themselves in the game and had a surprising amount of competence on offence behind QB Caldwell Higgins III.
RB Stavros Black would be a key contributor, scoring his first as an Athletic, and DB Joe Robinson got in on the scoring with a pick-6.

London got a pair from DL Dee Floyd and LB Dallas Dillard and Louisville grabbed on from LB Calvin Hardy.
RB Johnnie Stafford would come through in the second half with a pair of touchdowns which was assisted by a late DL Bjorn Sigmarsson forced fumble to give Louisville the ball in Tigers’ territory.

DB Neville Falkner kept up his dominant ways with an interception which he naturally took back for a touchdown.
DB Cameron Taylor had a pick and LB Rusty McVee had a forced fumble for the Gold Stars as well.
The Victors still got a forced fumble from LB Harrison Bennett which helped RB Don Gregson find the endzone a few plays later.

The Raiders would have a strong 3rd quarter but fell apart in the 4th after their 4 injuries started to affect the team.
DL Lonnie Vincent took advantage and got a forced fumble and a sack for the Blue Wings, the fumble leading to Jimmy Golden scoring another touchdown.

The Royals celebrated Canada Day with a huge win over their rivals.
QB Jean Matieau had a strong game leading the Royals with a pair of touchdowns and fairly consistent play all around.
Montreal seems to have lost their touch in the first few games, which was not helped by WR Derek Cross going down in the opening quarter.
DB Mingan Oliver had a pick for the Royals and DL Olaf Viktorsson was able to get to QB Gene Bishop a couple of times.
The Royals look like they're back up to speed so far with a strong win here.

The Independents came home to get a strong win over the Thunder.
The Thunder defence was still strong enough to keep Boston from getting to the endzone, but K Johnnie Berg was on point going 4 for 4 on field goals in the game to help the team to their second win of the season.
The Thunder offence took a while to get going, they would score a pair of touchdowns in the second half, but they need to be better in order to continue to win games.
Boston’s defence had a strong game with DB Petr Westerberg grabbing a pick and LB Konrad Aust getting a forced fumble.

The Tigers got back on the winning side with a strong win in Long Island.
The Raiders’ offence was unable to get into the endzone in the game getting stalled out but the Tigers’ defence anytime they got close.
Frustration continues to mount on the island with the team’s second straight 0-3 start.
The Tigers’ also snagged a pair of turnovers from LB Dallas Dillard and DB Jackson Miles which stole any momentum the Raiders were able to muster in the first half.

The Rouge rebounded from their tough loss against the Royals to get a strong win over The Athletics.
QB Gene Bishop threw for a pair of touchdowns while RB Scott Mallard-White matched him on the ground with 2 touchdowns of his own.
The defence caused a lot of havoc for The Athletics with 3 turnovers in the first half from DL Hubert Tessier, S Garet deVale, and LB Patrick Terry.
The Athletics were able to get a little bit of late offence with a Tony Albano touchdown, but they continue to be clearly outmatched.

A literal back and forth game had the Royals and Gold Stars going down to the final minutes where a QB Jean Matieau-led drive would break the cycle and win the game for the Royals.
The Royals continued their hot start with the offence and defence being able to go toe-to-toe with the Gold Stars.
DL Olaf Viktorsson made a big difference in getting to O’Rourke and forcing a fumble.
S Randall Green also had a pick for the Royals.
Providence made it a tough game with strong defensive play from DB Neville Falkner and DL Calias McDonough.

The Victors would come from behind to force a tie with the Buffalo Blue Wings on a last-minute touchdown pass from QB Stanley Troyer.
Buffalo was in control for the entire game but seemed to take their foot off the gas in the 4th quarter which was just enough to let the Victors get back into the game.
QB Stanley Troyer had a strong performance in the 4th but had 2 picks in the first 3 quarters.
DB Dean Hawkins and S Frazier Brooks came down with the picks for the Blue Wings.
However, the worst news came early in the 4th with DL Lonnie Vincent leaving the game with a major injury which will end his season early.

K Johnnie Berg had another big day with 4 more field goals, while S Drew Porter, DB Lawrence Ralph, and LB Konrad Aust all had picks in the game.
The Victors, unfortunately, lost QB Stanley Troyer to injury which led to QB Mike Key going in.
Key did alright, leading the team to a touchdown, but still threw 2 of the 2 interceptions on the day.

The Royals won their second straight against The Athletics to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1959.
Jean Matieau had another 3 passing touchdowns extending his lead in the league.
The defence had their fair share of strong moments with DL Olaf Viktorsson grabbing a fumble as well as LB Killian Reed and then former Athletic DB Wesley Scott and DB Mingan Oliver had picks.
The Athletics still managed to score a couple of touchdowns, but they still were no match for the Royals.

Dumont was solid with a pair of touchdowns and 302 passing yards.
The defence was strong as usual with LB Scotty Williams getting a fumble, DB Alexander Bradley and S Johnny Berger getting an interception.
The Rouge continued to struggle so far this season with their offence sputtering.
2 Interceptions was not ideal for Bishop in the game and there is growing criticism surrounding him and the Rouge so far this season from both the fans and the ownership.

The Raiders finally broke their winless streak with a come-from-behind win over the Blue Wings.
RB Dareion Fields took off in the second half in what was one of his best games since suffering a season-ending injury a couple of seasons ago.
QB Lyle Painter responded to his lackluster start with a strong 2-touchdown performance.
The Blue Wings were still strong in the loss with Lemieux throwing 2 touchdowns of his own.

RB Clifford Russell ran all over the Gold Stars in a 3-touchdown performance to give the Tigers their 3rd win of the season.
The Tigers' defence gave the Gold Stars a lot of trouble as well with DL Richard Blunt getting a forced fumble and a sack, and then DB Bob Ellis had an interception.
The Gold Stars were able to fight back with a DB Slay Mitchell interception on their defence.
The offence was fine aside from the 2 turnovers, with O’Rourke throwing a pair of TDs but there is a lot of concern about the team being able to keep up in the increasingly difficult East.

The Independents kept it close on the back of WR Ellis Lindholm’s two touchdowns, but the Tigers just ended up being the better team at the end.

The Thunder defence was suffocating outside of a couple of second-half drives from the Victors.
DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger had a pick each and DL Tyrone Affalo, LB Scotty Williams, and LB Silas O’Brien had a forced fumble each.
QB Stanley Troyer struggled in his return, but it's tough to really say when you are playing one of the best defences in the league.

The Gold Stars completed the sweep of the Independents for the first time since 1958 (overall 4th time in the NAAF’s history).
QB Connor O’Rourke had another strong performance with a 2 touchdown game while RB Marcus Devonshire picked up a pair of TDs of his own.
Both teams would lose their top WR in the game, but the Gold Stars took advantage of the situation with rookie WR Owen Paisley having a strong performance coming in and secondary made it tough on the Boston WRs.
S Shawn Jensen had a pick in the game for the Gold Stars.
Boston drops their second straight game with the offence being shut down in the second half.

The Rouge continued to struggle, losing their 3rd straight game falling further back from the rest of the East Division.
The first half was relatively close with both defences doing a good job of keeping the offence down.
DL Dexter Barbarcos had a forced fumble for the Rouge while LB Douglas MacDougall had one for the Royals.
The Royals took off behind QB Jean Matieau in the second half leading to the Royals taking a late 14 point lead.
QB Gene Bishop tried to get the team back into it with a late score, but it was not enough.

The Tigers kept rolling with their 4th straight win fending off a Buffalo comeback.
RB Clifford Russell continued his strong start with another pair of TDs.
The Lemieux-Pembroke duo put up another pair of TDs that got the team back into the game.
The duel between Kiernan and Lemieux is already looking like it could be one of the best battles over the next few years.

The Thunder rolled to another win taking down the still struggling Raiders.
The defence did their part by shutting down the Raiders' offence on almost every chance with Dareion Fields getting the lone late touchdown.
The Raiders' defence wasn’t too bad either, having one of their better games of the season, but the offence was non-existent which continues to raise the concern for the team that has now slipped to 2-5.
LB Scotty Williams and S Johnny Berger had turnovers for the Thunder while LB Gene Benson and DL Vernon Spears had turnovers for the Raiders.

Providence continued to ride their win streak, winning their 3rd in a row over the division-leading Royals.
QB Connor O’Rourke had another two-touchdown game to pass QB Jean Matieau at the top of the league.
Ottawa has looked a little troublesome over the last couple of weeks against solid teams which could spell trouble for the team down the stretch.
DB Neville Falkner was able to add to his interception total as well.

The Victors and Athletics game was impressively dull, as both teams really could not move the ball well.
Mistakes and incompletions were common on both teams leading to a lot of punts and a lot of field goals.
The Victors got a couple of turnovers on defence with DL William Sanderson and LB Harrison Bennett getting fumbles.

Montreal finally showed that they had a chance in this one, however, they collapsed in the final quarter with QB Nathaniel Braddock making a stellar comeback.
The Independents were slow out of the gate, but Braddock took charge in the second half leading the team on the comeback to keep up with Providence and Ottawa.
Montreal’s defence had some strong play with DB Quentin Xavier grabbing a pick, and Boston had some success with LB Brent Harper and DL Robin Hill getting fumbles.

Buffalo’s offence struggled against the tough Tigers’ D-line, with QB Charles Lemieux getting sacked 4 times.
DL Olympus Heights had a fumble and DB Jackson Miles took in a pick for the Tigers.

The Buffalo Blue Wings took advantage of an injury to Providence’s young star in DB Neville Falkner.
They were able to get the offence going and made a strong comeback to win their 3rd game of the season.
Providence certainly didn’t go down without a fight, but a late S Frazier Brooks interception led to RB Jimmy Golden putting the game out of reach.

Well, it was the worst-case scenario for the Boston Independents, who not only lost an important game to the Montreal Rouge but also lost their star QB Nathaniel Braddock for what is likely the rest of the season after taking a big hit from DL Dexter Barbarcos.
Montreal finally got over the hurdle with a win off of a TE Eli Grant touchdown.
Montreal’s defence took advantage of Boston’s backup QB Randy Sellers and caused him a lot of trouble, DL Hubert Tessier had 2 sacks on the day.

The Raiders made a change at QB for their game against the Tigers with Oscar Rigano stepping in for QB Lyle Painter.
Rigano has been in the league since 1956, but has had very little action in his career, in his first start, he was alright but the Tigers were too much.
The Tigers suffered major injuries with LB Dallas Dillard and LB Wilson Rockwood-Barnes would be left with 3-week injuries.
Kiernan and Russell would lead the way for the Tigers as they still put up 35 in the win.
Both of these teams seem to be highly likely to make moves ahead of the upcoming trade deadline.

The Thunder did what they were expected to do against the winless Athletics and put up 43 in the win.
DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger both took back a pick for a touchdown.
They keep ahead of the Tigers with the win and are looking for down to the final 4 games with their destiny in their hands.

TRADE DEADLINE UPCOMING
The trade deadline will be Tuesday at 6 PM ET, and there could be a lot of action coming. The major injuries this week will certainly spark both the Tigers and Independents to look at options to help. The Tigers are rumoured to be looking into several LB options with 3 of their 5 LBs injured. Boston may also be looking at QB options with Braddock going down for the next 6 weeks. As usual, Montreal will likely be trying to make something happen with GM Virgil Gross in control. They're hoping to inject some life into the team heading into the final few weeks. Providence could be active in the market as well as the team is still looking to go all in this season. The sellers are likely going to be the Athletics, however, Indiana and Buffalo might be looking to part ways with some of their older players. Ultimately, Long Island will be the team to watch. There has been plenty of rumours that GM Wayne Tillman has had enough with the current core and even QB Lyle Painter who could very well be available along with DB Jared Francis and LB Elijah Goldwater. The deadline could dramatically shift things if a lot of trades happen.

1962 Trade Deadline
With only 4 games left on the season, there was expected to be a lot of teams looking to make moves as Tuesday’s trade deadline approached. In the end, there were 8 trades before the deadline officially passed.

Monday, August 13, 1962 - 2:32 PM ET
The action kicked off Monday with the Louisville Thunder acquiring DB Mario Richard from the Buffalo Blue Wings in exchange for DB Will Atkinson and a 1963 3rd Round Pick. The Thunder hope that Richard will help to add depth to the secondary and will be able to come in if any of their starters go down. Buffalo on the other hand will be able to let some younger players get into the action and will grab an extra pick as well.

Monday, August 13, 1962 - 7:31 PM ET
As things started to dip into the evening leading to deadline day the Rouge would acquire WR Fred Summers from the Blue Wings in exchange for WR Christian Venegas and a 1964 3rd Rounder. GM Virgil Gross has been looking to add another younger weapon to the offence and hopes Summers can provide a boost, while the Blue Wings allow rookie WR Julius Drake to get more playing time along with a future pick.
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 8:05 AM ET
It was early in the morning when GM Allen Hutchinson made the first move for the Gold Stars acquiring WR Ronald Vernon from the Indiana Victors in exchange for WR Toni Radovanovic and a 1964 3rd Rounder. Vernon was a highly sought-after player with his lower salary that fits nicely on competing teams. Hutchinson wanted to add depth especially with WR Cedric Peterson having several injuries over the last couple of seasons. The Victors weren’t even using Vernon, who they picked up via free agency this year, and felt like they could add draft capital instead
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 11:12 AM ET
It was quiet for a while before the Providence Gold Stars made the biggest splash of the day. They acquired LB Elijah Goldwater from the Long Island Raiders in exchange for LB Brady O’Conner and a 1963 1st Rounder. Goldwater is a strong leader and a former teammate of LB Rusty McVee and DB Slay Mitchell who are both a part of the Gold Stars. It seems like the perfect fit for the veteran LB who will certainly be happy to be on a contending team once again. As for the Raiders, they of course get a 1st round pick, which will be very helpful as well as a younger LB in O’Conner who can help in retooling the Raiders and getting them back on track. The Raiders did retain $5,000 of Goldwater’s contract as well.
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 2:49 PM ET
The deadline was fast approaching which finally led to the Rouge and Raiders pulling the trigger on a deal that would send DB Jared Francis and DL Dale Rothery to the Rouge for DL Blain Caswell, DB Clayton Malone, a 1963 2nd Round pick, and a 1965 4th Round Pick. Virgil Gross was certainly aggressive during the deadline and really wanted to add Francis to help the struggling secondary get a bit of a boost for the team heading into the final few games. The Raiders like Caswell to add some more depth to the DL while moving Rothery, who was traded to Long Island only a year after being taken 5th overall in the draft, as he has just not developed much in the year and a half they have had him.
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 3:26 PM ET
The Royals would acquire S Clancy Scott from The Athletics for a 1964 4th Rounder to replace S Randall Green who is done for the season.
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 4:01 PM ET
GM Joseph Johnson had been in talks with GM Reginald McMahon from the Blue Wings all day about Buffalo LB Lloyd Mathis, but a deal was not able to be done. Johnson would fall back to plan B and acquired LB David Marx from the Victors for a 1963 3rd Rounder.
Tuesday, August 14, 1962 - 5:39 PM ET
The last move of the day came in the final hour with Boston bringing back QB Bart Swayze from the Tigers for LB Dwyane Jonestroy. The Tigers hope Jonestroy will add more depth for the LB spot and Boston is looking to give QB Randy Sellers some support down the stretch.

The Thunder ran over the Blue Wings with a dominant 45-18 win that started with a 14-0 lead before the offence touched the field.
WR Piers Key was the clear star taking a touchdown back on the opening kickoff and then bringing in 2 more later in the game.
Buffalo’s offence just could not handle the Thunder defence, especially after WR Julius Drake left the game with a minor injury.

The Gold Stars would recover from their loss to the Blue Wings last week with a strong win over the Raiders.
LB Elijah Goldwater made his Gold Stars debut against his old team and had 5 tackles on the day.
The Raiders went back to QB Lyle Painter, but once again he was unable to get the offence going until the 3rd when the game was far from being in their control.
The good news for the Raiders was rookie DB Lauri Hayha getting his first career interception.

The Royals would clinch their return to the playoffs with a huge win over the Braddock-less Independents.
They jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead, before cooling off, but they were able to hold them off in the second half for the win
QB Randy Sellers had some flashes of strong play throughout the game, but still made some mistakes which hindered the comeback in the end.

The Rouge put on a show in Quebec City with an absolute demolition of The Athletics, if it weren’t for the rain, the players may have gone up in flames.
A couple of the highlights were the two defensive touchdowns with DL Hubert Tessier falling on the ball in the endzone, and then DB Jayson Kylde picking up the ball following a massive hit delivered by LB Patrick Terry on WR Tony Albano.
The Rouge seem to be catching fire late and could make a serious threat down the stretch.

Despite having several missing pieces in the LB core the Tigers were able to recover and pull out their 7th straight win.
Nimrod remained on fire knocking home 5 FGs in the win.
RB Clifford Russell also had a strong day with a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
The Victors’ offence was unable to get the ball moving late in the game, some of that came from QB Stanley Troyer making some mistakes, which might mean QB Mike Key will get some action in the last 3 weeks.

The Victors and the Blue Wings locked into a duel in an important game with playoff implications.
The Victors had made the switch to QB Mike Key for the game, who had a great performance with 3 passing touchdowns, however, a lot of credit will go to WR Ed Edwards who had 127 Receiving yards including a 47-yard touchdown to win the game.
Buffalo was able to tie up the game late on a pass to rookie WR Julius Drake, but their defence was unable to stop Indiana who now takes over 3rd in the West.

The Gold Stars took care of business in a strong win over The Athletics in the NAAF’s first trip to Springfield, MA.
It was a bit more of a kicking fest, but the Gold Stars still flashed their offensive might with 3 touchdowns.
LB Elijah Goldwater found some comfort in the Gold Stars’ defence with an interception, while LB Rusty McVee did his usual “hit now, think later” routine, grabbing a forced fumble on the day.
Rookie QB Michael Benedict got his first career start and did alright, but struggled overall.
The Athletics 1961 draft pick QB Buck Murphy also got in for a couple of snaps after Benedict was rocked by LB Rusty McVee.

The Independents came through with a huge win on the road in Ottawa that certainly keeps them in the hunt for the playoffs and opens the door for the Gold Stars in the East Division race.
The Royals tried to make a comeback, but the Independents defence stood strong with a great stop during the 2-point conversion.

The Rouge managed to continue their tear back into the playoff hunt with a massive win over the battered Tigers.
London tried everything, but with RB Clifford Russell getting knocked out and LB Red Clarkson also hindering the LB core again they just could not keep up.
RB Scott Mallard-White has been struggling this season, but he managed to eat up the Tigers’ defence and score a pair of touchdowns in the win.
S Garet deVale also made his mark with a big interception to stop a Tigers’ drive in the redzone.

They struggled throughout the first half, but their defence was strong out of the gate with LB Brent Harper getting a forced fumble and DB Mordecai King had an interception as well.
The Raiders were awful in their return home, which saw QB Oscar Rigano start.
The QB could not get the offence going, even when their defence was keeping the Independents at bay.
The poor play ended up leading the fans to boo their hometown team.

They got off to a massive start with a 16-0 lead out of the gate.
WR Ed Edwards would open the scoring before DL William Sanderson would grab a safety.
After Indy’s second touchdown Louisville would have to bounce back.
The Thunder would climb back and even with back-to-back touchdowns in the 4th to take a late lead.
However, WR Alexei Dubois turned it around with a massive return into Louisville territory that would set up K Ross Poindexter a field goal to win the game.

The win does give the Victors their best record in franchise history at 5-6-1.
The Raiders had a much better game with QB Terry Bourbon getting the start, which might mean he has a chance to return to the team next season.

A stellar duel in Louisville for the West Division came down to the wire.
Both teams went back and forth trying to get an upper hand.
Louisville had the lead late, but QB Riley Kiernan would manage to pick apart the Thunder defence to take one last shot at the endzone.
Kiernan would find WR Jack Duncan open for the touchdown that would cut the lead down to 1.
They would go for 2 since a tie would mean the Thunder win the division.
On the attempt, Kiernan would roll out and would find WR Russell Wilcox, who would make a difficult catch to give the Tigers their second straight West Division title.

1962 Regular Season Recap

1962 Division Semi-Finals Preview

East Division Semi-Final - Ottawa Royals VS. Montreal Rouge
Head-to-Head: W2 OTT 27-22 MTL, W6 MTL 14-21 OTT

A classic Canadian rivalry will kick off the playoffs. However, it will be a match between a red hot team and a team that has been cooling off. The Rouge closed out the season with 5 straight wins that made them the least desired opponent in the first round of the playoffs. The Royals have not been quite as strong with only 2 wins in their last 6 which means they are not looking the best going in. Montreal is hungry for a playoff win, which they have not had since the 1953 McCallister Cup, so they will be throwing everything out there on the field. As for the Royals, they will be aiming to continue their streak of divisional playoff wins which they have not lost since 1953. Overall, Montreal is the hot hand and I don’t think their season ends yet.
My Pick: Rouge

West Division Semi-Final - Louisville Thunder VS. Boston Independents
Head-to-Head: W3 BOS 26-20 LOU

The Thunder have stumbled in the past couple of weeks with back-to-back losses, but they were only by a combined 3 points so they are certainly still one of the teams to beat. Boston was one of 3 teams to beat the Thunder, however, they did do it with QB Nathaniel Braddock in the lineup. Still, the Thunder have been the best team overall all season so it is very much in their favour at home against the Independents.
My Pick: Thunder
