Buffalo reinforced the fact that they are favourites to repeat as champions with a strong 21-11 win over the Raiders.
Both defences were playing quite well in the first half, but Lemieux was able to create some offence in the second half with a pair of touchdown passes.
DL William Sanderson made his mark for Buffalo as well with 5 tackles and 2 sacks off of the line already showing his impact.
The Raiders offence was struggling with the strong Blue Wings front 7 keeping RB Dareion Fields at bay, and then that same line getting to QB Stanley Troyer many times throughout the game.

What could be a division-deciding game, ended up being a stellar shootout between QBs Gene Bishop and Nathaniel Braddock.
The Rouge had jumped ahead to a strong lead in the 3rd, however, Braddock would march the Independents back into the game with 17 straight points to force overtime.
Montreal would end up being the only team to score in overtime after WR Yahui Sun broke off a 45-yard play to set up RB Scott Mallard-White for the game-winning score.

A slow game first half in Toronto, opened up in the second half as both teams lit up the endzone multiple times.
QB Lee Rogers showed his abilities through the air and had taken over in the second half after splitting some snaps with young QB Landon Ross in the first half.
QB Todd Baker was able to counter the Royals surge with a late score to put them over the top and open the season on a win.

Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 7, Indiana Victors - 16 - Riverfront Stadium of Pittsburgh - June 26, 1965 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Cloudy

7-13 PIT - RTD RB Stavros Black
4th Q
7-16 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

The opening game for the Blacksmiths was certainly an ugly one; The Victors got off to a decent start, but some mistakes from 2nd-year QB Tom Applewhite would lead to a 0-6 halftime score.
Applewhite would get back into it with his first touchdown to TE Emmanuel Hines.
RB Stavros Black would lead the way for the Blacksmiths and scored the team’s first touchdown in franchise history.
Indiana was strong defensively creating some havoc for QB Buck Murphy throughout, DL Fred Webster led the way with a sack and 3 tackles on the line.

Halifax Mariners - 17, Louisville Thunder - 23 - Atlantic Stadium - June 27, 1965 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

17-23 HFX - RTD RB Ronald O’Sullivan

The Thunder were able to pull off a win on the road in Halifax on the back of RB Rodney Clark and a simple game plan.
QB Michael Benedict was pretty solid in the game with a passing touchdown but still made some mistakes in the first half throwing 2 picks to DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger.
RB Ronald O’Sullivan was able to break off a strong run to give Halifax a shot late, but the Thunder was able to hold on.

London Tigers - 27, Providence Gold Stars - 9 - Western Fair Stadium - June 27, 1965 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Mostly Cloudy
1st Q

DL Richard Blunt had a forced fumble and LB Dallas Dillard did as well; DB Jackson Miles had a pick as well for the Tigers.
The only touchdown that Providence was able to score had come off of a DB Neville Falkner interception.
QB Riley Kiernan was solid throughout with a pair of touchdown passes in the first half with RB Austin Andrews having a strong game on the ground as well.

There were plenty of field goals flying on Canada day with both Ira Foster and Nimrod Handsworth putting up 4 field goals each.
The Tigers’ offence ended up being the more successful of the two, still being able to get to the endzone 3 times.
Their defence also had a strong game, much like last week, however, the Royals did still manage to get the offence moving with Jean Matieau’s smart playcalling and QB Lee Rogers’ ability to make something happen.

Toronto Steelheads - 31, Montreal Rouge - 24 - Anderson Stadium - July 2, 1965 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Mostly Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 TOR - FG K Bob Randall

4th Q

24-24 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis
31-24 TOR - PTD QB Todd Baker -> WR Edmund Landry

The Steelheads pulled off a big upset over the Rouge in their second straight game at home.
The Steelheads were helped by a major injury to DB Jayson Klyde of the Rouge, which opened up the field for Todd Baker.
They also got some help from the defence with DL Lawrence Armstrong grabbing a forced fumble off of RB Scott Mallard-White.
Montreal was able to keep themselves in the game with their own offensive success, however, they fell just short in the end.

Indiana Victors - 6, Halifax Mariners - 14 - Victory Stadium - July 3, 1965 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q

3-14 HFX - PTD QB Michael Benedict -> WR Joshua Lafleur
3rd Q
4th Q
6-14 IND - FG K Ross Poindexter

The Mariners bounced back from their tough loss to the Thunder with a strong defensive win over the Victors.
DL Wayne Baxton had a great day getting to QB Tom Applewhite for 3 sacks and even a forced fumble.
The Mariners’ offence was productive during the 2nd quarter capitalizing on DB Aquilio Ruiz’s first career interception to take a 3-7, as well as a strong drive as the half came to an end.
Indiana was frustrated throughout, especially Applewhite who was still making a lot of mistakes which often would either end with turnovers or lead to 2 and outs.
There is a possibility that the team may shift to QB Lyle Painter soon if Applewhite continues to struggle.

Providence Gold Stars - 13, Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 25 - July 3, 1965 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-3 PIT - FG K Al Highlander

13-16 PRO - RTD RB Rashed Smith
13-22 PIT - PTD QB Buck Murphy -> WR Wilson Queensgate
4th Q
13-25 PIT - FG K Al Highlander

The Pittsburgh Blacksmiths quickly showed that they were not going to be rolled over by the league all season with a strong win over the Providence Gold Stars.
Their defence was able to take advantage of several Gold Stars mistakes, like a pair of fumbles, and an interception thrown by QB Connor O’Rourke to DB Elvin Waters.
Their offence also jumped on the opportunities and got many chances to score with a strong performance from RB Stavros Black.
K Al Highlander was solid but did miss a field goal and an extra point which could have meant more for the Blacksmiths.
The Gold Stars’ struggles are a bit surprising but there are some concerns with the team’s new offensive coordinator Jack Dorsey over the offensive woes.

Louisville Thunder - 9, Long Island Raiders - 32 - July 4, 1965 - 2 PM ET - 4th of July - Weather: Mostly Cloudy
1st Q
0-7 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields

3-25 LI - Single K Henderson Schmacher

4th Q

9-32 LOU - FG K Frank Hughes

It was a catastrophic first half for the Thunder who could not get the ball moving at all against the strong Raiders’ defence on top of 4 turnovers in the first half.
DB Alexander Bradley and DB Lauri Hayha each had a pick, while DL Vernon Spears and LB William Washington II each got a forced fumble.
RB Dareion Fields also had a field day against the Thunder’s front 7 running all over them for 152 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns.
QB Leonidas Dumont struggled a lot in the disastrous first half but would recover for an okay second half and get some points on the board.

Boston Independents - 24, Buffalo Blue Wings - 17 - July 4, 1965 - 6 PM ET - 4th of July - Weather: Clear

10-17 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
17-17 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Evan Clanton
4th Q
24-17 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Chester Bennett

The Independents were able to take down the defending champions on the 4th of July in another come-from-behind effort led by QB Nathaniel Braddock.
Boston continues to show their resilience with the win and is showing they could be a tough team to beat, even when you think you got them beat.
Buffalo certainly did not play badly, but Boston was able to shut down their offence in the second half, on the back of a DB Mordecai King interception and LB Konrad Aust forced a fumble that prevented major scores.

1965 Week 3
Indiana Victors - 38, London Tigers - 28 - Victory Stadium - July 9, 1965 - 7 PM ET - FNF - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-7 LDN - RTD RB Austin Andrews
7-7 IND - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> TE Emmanuel Hines

4th Q
31-21 IND - PTD QB Lyle Painter -> WR Ed Edwards
31-28 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Russell Wilcox
38-28 IND - RTD RB Raymond Green

Indiana decided to make a change at QB after a pair of lacklustre offensive performances with Tom Applewhite under center, and it paid off with QB Lyle Painter throwing 3 touchdowns in an upset win over the unbeaten Tigers.
Painter was on a mission to prove himself and played one of the best games of his career.
London was in it till the end, but a late interception from DB Kelly Kirkland would spoil the comeback attempt and set up a RB Raymond Green touchdown run to seal the deal.

Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 18, Toronto Steelheads - 14 - Riverfront Stadium of Pittsburgh - July 10, 1965 - 12 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 PIT - FG K Al Highlander
2nd Q

3rd Q
10-14 TOR - RTD RB Max Tracy
11-14 PIT - Single K Al Highlander
4th Q
18-14 PIT - RTD RB Stavros Black

The Blacksmiths came through with their second straight win taking down the other unbeaten team a day after Indiana beat London.
Toronto had a strong performance, but their offence could not get points in the final quarter.
Pittsburgh is quickly starting to work together well and has seen a massive improvement from the opening weeks of the season and might be able to make a run at the playoffs if they continue this trend.

Louisville Thunder - 27, Montreal Rouge - 24 - Thunder Stadium - July 10, 1965 - 3:30 PM - Weather: Partly Cloudy
1st Q
3-0 LOU - FG K Frank Hughes
10-0 LOU - RTD RB Rodney Clark
2nd Q

13-7 LOU - FG K Frank Hughes
3rd Q

20-10 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
4th Q
20-17 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Taylor Karis
20-24 MTL - PTD QB Gene Bishop -> WR Derek Cross
27-24 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Sammy Moss

It was another unfortunate loss for the Rouge who fell short again, this time to the Thunder who seemed to have found themselves in a better position after a tough week 2.
Bishop still had a strong day with a pair of passing touchdowns in the loss, but he is still frustrated considering the defence had a blown coverage the resulted in the last touchdown for Louisville.
QB Leonidas Dumont looked his best so far this season in the win, but still made some mistakes like the interception thrown to S Garet deVale.
Louisville’s own defence certainly helped with DB Oliver Langstrom bringing back a pick and the front seven being a little more consistent.

Halifax Mariners - 35, Providence Gold Stars - 20 - Atlantic Stadium - July 10, 1965 - 7 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
7-0 HFX - PTD QB Michael Benedict -> WR Joshua Lafleur

14-3 HFX - PTD QB Michael Benedict -> WR Shane Steadman
2nd Q
14-10 PRO - RTD RB Rashed Smith
3rd Q

21-13 PRO - FG K Maurice Lafayette
4th Q
28-13 HFX - DTD FUM DL Pat Butler
35-13 HFX - RTD RB Ronald O’Sullivan
35-20 PRO - PTD QB Connor O’Rourke -> WR Owen Paisley

The Mariners showed off a bit of their offensive potential with Benedict throwing a pair of touchdowns in the first half, and RB Ronald O’Sullivan scoring a pair of his own in the second half.
They also had help from the defence with DL Wayne Baxton knocking the ball out of the arms of QB Connor O’Rourke before DL Pat Butler picked it up and scored.
The Gold Stars’ offence continued to struggle but showed more promise than in previous weeks, but it is still a work in progress with the new system.

Ottawa Royals - 15, Buffalo Blue Wings - 27 - Royals Stadium at Brewer Park - July 11, 1965 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

9-20 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
4th Q
15-20 OTT - PTD QB Lee Rogers -> WR Marshall Leonard
15-27 BUF - RTD RB Jimmy Golden

The Blue Wings bounced back from their loss from the Independents with a strong win in Ottawa.
The Royals kept themselves in the game, but they still were not able to get over the hump this season joining Providence at 0-3.
DL William Sanderson and DL Lonnie Vincent both created a lot of trouble for the Royals especially on the ground with their relentless pressure, showing just how difficult the duo could be this season.

Boston Independents - 16, Long Island Raiders - 10 - Richardson Stadium - July 11, 1965 - 4 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy
1st Q
0-7 LI - RTD RB Dareion Fields

10-7 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Evan Clanton
3rd Q
16-7 BOS - PTD QB Nathaniel Braddock -> WR Alexei Dubois
4th Q
16-10 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher

Boston pulled off a strong win over the defensive powerhouse of the Raiders on the back of a pair of passing touchdowns from Braddock.
The Raiders’ defence was still strong, but Boston was able to continue to convert on plays to keep drives alive throughout the game that ultimately made the difference.
As good as their defence was the Raider offence was just not up to par and could not get past a solid performing Boston defence.

The Mariners would come through with their 3rd straight win, taking down the Tigers who ended up losing 4 players throughout the game.
QB Michael Benedict continued to look comfortable in the starting role throwing 3 touchdowns in the win, however, he still made a couple of mistakes, throwing picks to DB Jackson Miles and DB Bob Ellis.
Halifax’s defence did bail out the young QB stalling the Tigers out for only a field goal on both interceptions.

The Raiders bounced back in their home-opener (finally), with a strong defensive win over the Victors.
LB William Washington II was a star for the Raiders with a forced fumble and 12 Tackles.
RB Dareion Fields continued to do what he does best with a pair of touchdowns on the ground.
QB Lyle Painter was not quite as impressive as his 3-touchdown game from week 3, he threw a couple of interceptions, but still almost got the Victors back into the game, before they had sealed it late.

The Gold Stars looked terrible once again on defence with continuous mishaps and terrible play-calling and execution.
At this point, after only scoring 51 points in 4 games (average of 12.75 a game), the fans of Providence are calling for someone’s head and it is very likely going to come in the form of the coaching staff.
Ottawa had a strong performance with OC Jean Matieau and HC Joseph Curry out doing the Gold Stars’ strategy, with QB Lee Rogers leading the way.

The Blue Wings powered through and took down the Thunder in a dominant fashion on the back of RB Jimmy Golden taking in 3 touchdowns in the game including a 43-yard run to seal the game.
Louisville was unable to close out drives throughout the game and fell far behind quickly.
The Blue Wings D-line was back to full health as well and made things tough on the Thunder throughout the game with 4 sacks combined, which often stalled out Thunder drives.

The Steelheads bounced back from their loss to the Blacksmiths with a strong win over the Boston Independents.
Boston was unable to make a 4th quarter comeback this time around on a LB Rusty McVee forced fumble on WR Alexei Dubois in the redzone that saved a sure touchdown.
The Toronto coaching staff seems to be continuing to take the somewhat underskilled Steelheads team and keeps pushing them to victories and they could easily make the push for the playoffs at this rate.

The Rouge were desperate to get back to winning after back-to-back losses, and they would dismantle the Blacksmiths in a 42-15 win.
QB Gene Bishop was on a mission hitting all 3 of his top WRs for a touchdown each, including Yahui Sun’s first.
S Garet deVale had a field day with QB Buck Murphy, knocking down 3 passes and coming down with 2 picks including one that he returned for a touchdown.
Pittsburgh was still managing to move the ball, but it was a rough day overall, in fact, the team did let QB Mike Key get some snaps as well in the final quarter.

1965 Week 5

BREAKING NEWS - GOLD STARS FIRE HEAD COACH AND OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
After a shocking 0-4 start, the Gold Stars have decided to make some changes and have fired Head Coach Harry Meadows and Offensive Coordinator Jack Dorsey. Meadows had been the head coach since 1959, after moving over from the defensive coordinator role with the Royals. He had always seemed a bit shaky in the role but was able to maintain some success which did include a trip to the McCallister Cup in 1963. However, at this point, they had enough and decided to make a change. Going along with him is OC Jack Dorsey who had only been hired for the role this offseason, however, the abysmal offence has the team easily willing to move on from Dorsey.

To replace the two members of the staff, the team has hired former Boston defensive coordinator Carroll Moss as the interim head coach. Moss had been with the Independents for 5 seasons and won a title, and seems like a good fit for at least this season. For OC the team decided to go to an old reliable and hired Dean Parrish as the offensive coordinator. Parrish was once the Gold Stars’ OC from 1956-1958, before being promoted to HC after Roy Aguirre had been let go. He also spent 4 years with the Athletics as their head coach between 1959-1962. Hopefully, the two can turn things around for the Gold Stars who were certainly hoping to be a lot closer to the playoffs this season.

Bishop still had a strong game including taking in his own touchdown to help Montreal take a lead in the 4th.

The Royals came away with their second straight win over the Thunder.
QB Lee Rogers had a great 1st quarter before the offence fell into a rhythm with field goals throughout the rest of the game.
Louisville did manage to pull themselves back into the game in the second half but it was not enough to catch the Royals in the end.
DB Jerome Caldwell continued to show improvement in his second season reeling in his 3rd interception of the season.

The Tigers got back to winning on a last-second field goal to improve to 3-2.
The Raiders’ defence was tough throughout, but QB Riley Kiernan would not be denied in the 2-minute drill.
The Raiders did get a late score on only the second passing touchdown of the season for QB Stanley Troyer.
DB Jackson Miles did have a chance to shine coming down with an unreal interception on a pass intended for Raiders’ WR Larry Mossholder.

Pittsburgh recovered from their beatdown against Montreal last week to put up a competitive threat against the Independents, however, QB Nathaniel Braddock was not letting the Independents completely slip and would find the endzone in the 4th to get the win.
RB Stavros Black continues to be the center-piece of the Blacksmiths’ offence with a pair of touchdowns on the day.
DL Timmy Kerr did get the best of Stavros Black once with a forced fumble on the day.
WR Alexei Dubois finally showing up a little more with his best game as an Independent which included the game-winner.

Providence Gold Stars - 8, Toronto Steelheads - 24 - New Providence Stadium - July 25, 1965 - 1 PM ET - Weather: Mostly Cloudy

The coaching change in Providence certainly got off to a slow start, however, it isn’t surprising considering the mid-week change.
The 4th quarter did show some promise, but it certainly may take an extra week to get comfortable.
Toronto on the other hand continued to look good with their strong coaching staff combined with a great performance from RB Max Tracy leading to the team’s 4th win of the season.

The Blue Wings looked to solidify their spot at the top of the NAAF with a big win over the Mariners.
It was a defensive battle overall with both teams being able to stall out the other and force many field goals instead of touchdowns.
Buffalo overall controlled the game and sealed it with a QB Charles Lemieux touchdown to WR Zachariah Pembroke.

The Raiders’ defence came up big with a stellar performance against the Mariners keeping the team at only 5 points (3 offensively) all game.
LB William Washington II had a strong day with 11 tackles and a forced fumble, and DB Rutherford Winters and DB Alexander Bradley both came down with an interception.
Halifax’s offence could not move the ball and continuously ran into mistakes and great pressure from the Raider defence which did lead to 4 sacks on the day.

The Steelheads got revenge on the Blacksmiths in the rematch from their week 3 matchup; the win gives the Steelheads their 3rd straight win.
QB Todd Baker and RB Max Tracy continued to roll on and show that the duo seems to be taking the Steelheads to the next level leaving the team at 5-1 through 6 games.
Pittsburgh certainly didn’t have a bad game as a pair of passing touchdowns from QB Buck Murphy kept it close until Tracy sealed the game late in the 4th.

The struggles continued for the Thunder while the Victors continued to find their footing.
Louisville looked in control in the first half, especially with their defence coming up with a pair of turnovers from DB Oliver Langstrom and S Johnny Berger.
In the second half, it ended up being Indiana who started to come back with a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd to take a lead.
Louisville’s offence sputtered in the second half with the Victors’ defence stepping up to take control of the game.

It seems like the Gold Stars still have a lot of things to figure out as they fell once again to drop to 0-6.
Boston certainly knew how to handle the Gold Stars in this win with what looked to be a dominant win for the team.
RB Kendall Morgan got a chance to shine more in this one with a pair of touchdowns and 86 yards on the ground.
DB Neville Falkner almost had a pick taken back to the endzone but was stopped by WR Alexei Dubois before he got there.

The Rouge-Royals rivalry saw another classic with the Royals pulling off the surprising upset on a last-second field goal from Ira Foster.
The Royals did jump out to a couple of leads off of a great game from 2nd-year WR Colby Bancana who took home a punt return for a score and then stepped up for the injured WR Mackenzie Jones and scored again.
The Rouge were able to rebound and take 2-point leads twice, but they could not stay ahead in the end.

The Blue Wings and Tigers made a great encore for the Royals-Rouge matchup with another game that came down to a field goal at the end.
An eventful game early on quieted down, but slowly London managed to inch back into the game.
Buffalo had the chance to ice the game, but K Ryan Perch missed the point-after which allowed the Tigers to tie the game up.
Perch was able to redeem himself by the end of the game with the game-winning kick to give Buffalo their 5th win of the season.

The Raiders got their second straight win on the back of their usually suffocating defence, but as well as a 2 touchdown performance from QB Stanley Troyer.
Pittsburgh showed some life early in the second half but they were quickly discouraged with back-to-back interceptions following their only touchdown.
DB Lauri Hayha and DB Rutherford Winters had the two interceptions for the Raiders.

The Thunder would end their 3-game slide with a win at home against the Steelheads in overtime.
RB Greg Dix, who was in for RB Rodney Clark, would be the hero, breaking through for the game-winning score in the extra frame.
The Thunder defence looked stronger in the win as well being able to stall out a solid Steelheads’ offence in overtime on a big interception from S Johnny Berger to seal the win.
Toronto felt that they were in control of the game overall in the second half, but they could not pull away from the Thunder, and a couple of mistakes from the team as a whole would only help the Thunder.

The Gold Stars finally showed a bit of promise in a 21-28 loss to the Victors.
The offence was able to keep the team in the game until the end, some might have thought the team may finally get their first win of the season, however, the QB Lyle Painter has been playing his best football and was able to pull Indiana back to win their 5th game of the season.
Indiana now has just their second 3-game win streak in the team’s history with their last one coming at the end of the 1962 season.

The Rouge finally got a win on the road taking down the Mariners in Halifax.
QB Gene Bishop had a strong game once again throwing 3 more passing touchdowns to bring his total to 17 on the season.
The Rouge WR core has been a pain in the back of many teams this season as they continue to roll on as the league’s highest-scoring offence.
The Mariners tried to stay in the game, but QB Michael Benedict struggled down the stretch with a pair of interceptions thrown to DB Quentin Xavier and S Garet deVale.
There are some concerns with the Mariners now that they have dropped their last 3 games, some may want to potentially see a change be made at QB if Benedict can’t pick things up.

An eventful 4th quarter would end with QB Nathaniel Braddock leading the Independents down the field on another game-winning drive to clinch their 5th win of the season and keep their lead of the East Division.
Braddock continued to look good with another 3 touchdowns on the day picking a part the Royals’ secondary.
Ottawa was still able to make a late push to stay in the game, even taking the lead on a WR Marshall Leonard touchdown in the 4th.

The Tigers got their revenge in the Buffalo-London rematch following a back and forth second half.
QB Riley Kiernan led an excellent game-winning drive while facing the pressure from the Blue Wings’ powerful D-line, to clinch the game on a touchdown to WR Max Sutton.
Buffalo almost had the win, with Lemieux throwing his touchdown pass with just over 2 minutes to go, but that ended up being too much time for Kiernan and the Tigers.

The Victors kept their hot streak rolling with not only the team’s longest win streak now at 4 while also achieving 6 wins in a season for the first time in franchise history.
QB Lyle Painter continued his excellence this season with 3 more passing touchdowns to his name, while QB Lee Rogers struggled for the Royals throwing 3 interceptions in the loss.
QB Landon Ross did see the field more in the second half to give the young gun some snaps for the Royals.
DB Kelly Kirkland also had a huge game with one of the interceptions and a forced fumble at one point as well.

The Gold Stars caught the Blue Wings napping in the first quarter with a quick 0-14 lead on the back of two Cedric Peterson touchdowns.
Buffalo was able to recover and even take a 20-17 lead into the final quarter of the game.
Providence managed to tie the game up midway through the final frame which forced Buffalo to get more aggressive offensively again.
The aggressiveness did not pay off as DB Neville Falkner would come up with a huge interception in the 4th to stop the Blue Wings and set up Lafayette for the game-winning field goal.
Providence finally ended their winless season with the shocking win over the Blue Wings who now fall behind in the West Division race.

Pittsburgh Blacksmiths - 13, Halifax Mariners - 30 - Riverfront Stadium of Pittsburgh - August 14, 1965 - 3 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

The battle between the two former teammates of QB Buck Murphy and QB Michael Benedict had the younger Benedict coming out on top in a fairly dominant win.
The Mariners controlled the game throughout and even when the Blacksmiths pulled themselves back into the game, they quickly found their offence again with another touchdown.
WR Joshua Lafleur had a strong game after having quite a quiet season so far.
DL Wayne Baxton continued his dominance on the line with 3 sacks in the win, while rookie DB Aquilio Ruiz grabbed another interception on the season.

Long Island Raiders - 34, Toronto Steelheads - 6 - Long Island Stadium - August 14, 1965 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Cloudy

4th Q
27-6 LI - FG K Henderson Schumacher
34-6 LI - DTD INT DB Alexander Bradley

The Raiders’ defence continued to smother their opponent’s offence in an easy 34-6 win over the Steelheads.
Dareion Fields pretty much won the game from the start, exploding for a 34-yard touchdown run on their opening drive.
Toronto looked to bounce back, but QB Todd Baker was stripped by DL Pionk Bjorkkstrand on the ensuing drive which ultimately crushed the Steelheads, with the Raiders’ second touchdown of the game coming shortly after.
The 3-straight at home certainly helped give the Raiders momentum, as their defence stalled other teams out to only 21 points in 3 games (to which they scored 78). They remain the only team to not allow 100 total points yet this season.

The Thunder were able to feed off of the momentum of their overtime win over the Steelheads to grab another upset win over the Independents.
K Frank Hughes was clutch for the Thunder with 3 field goals on the day with RB Greg Dix having another solid day while RB Rodney Clark recovers from his injury.
Boston’s offence was not quite as dominant as it has been and was stalled out from a great performance from the Thunder secondary.

4th Q
20-23 LDN - PTD QB Riley Kiernan -> WR Max Sutton
23-23 MTL - FG K Arthur Kettinger
23-26 LDN - FG K Nimrod Handsworth

A classic Canadian battle came down to the kickers, and ultimately it was Nimrod who won out the battle and gave the Tigers their 5th win of the season after kicking 4 field goals.
London’s win puts them right in the race in the West once again fighting with the top 4.
Montreal’s tendency to fall short this season continues as they lose by 5 or less for the 4th time this season.
There are a lot of concerns about both the offence leaving too much time, but also the defence not being able to shut down opponents at the end of games.

1965 Trade Deadline

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - 8:32 AM ET
The Royals kicked off the trade day craziness by selling. While the team had shown that they are somewhat competitive this season, after back-to-back losses and a desire to focus on building the team would make a couple of trades. The first would send 33-year-old LB John MacDonald to the Raiders for a 2nd Round Pick and LB Ronald Palmer. The Raiders are missing LB Deon Wiggins for what could be most of the season, so they are hoping to get some backup with the veteran in the lineup.

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - 8:48 AM ET
Within the next half hour, the Royals made a second trade that would send veteran WR Benedict Spencer to the Blue Wings for a 4th Rounder (plus both WR Billy Bond and WR Houston Parker to balance the rosters). Spencer had been the 5th WR on the Royals roster this season, and while he was fine with the role, he had asked if there was an opportunity to move to a better spot on another team, the Royals have the go-ahead. His spot on Buffalo will not be starting, but he will likely see the field especially with the struggling WR Daniel Irons needing some more support.

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - 11:31 AM ET
The next move was the big one of the day. The Toronto Steelheads were in dire need of a top-tier LB due to the fact that both LB Daniel Carpenter and LB Rusty McVee were on the verge of retirement. So with the Gold Stars’ struggles, they were able to close on a deal for LB Sebastian Andrews III. The full deal would be LB Sebastian Andrews III and a 3rd round pick to the Steelheads in exchange for Toronto’s 1st round pick, LB Kenneth Mercer, and Boston’s 5th round pick.

Andrews had only been acquired by the Gold Stars last trade deadline after he had been flipped from Montreal to Indiana and then to Providence. Andrews is a solid defender and he is right in his prime which should be good for the Steelheads to build around on the back end with the change of the guard coming to this offseason. As for Providence, they do give up the strong LB, but they do get a 1st round pick which is tough to come by prior to the actual draft, and a 24-year-old LB in Mercer who might be able to find himself as a #3 starter.

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - 1:42 PM ET
Providence was back on making moves later on in the day with a swap that many more predicted would happen earlier. The Tigers have had a need at TE since Tranquille Rousseau had gone down with an injury. So they decided to go out and grab veteran TE Micheal Bowman III in exchange for a 2nd round pick and TE Danny Harmon. Bowman has been a solid scoring presence on the Gold Stars over his 11-year career, so he should be a great piece for the Tigers to add as they make another (and potentially final) push for the McCallister Cup.

Tuesday, August 17, 1965 - 2:59 PM ET
Toronto ended up being a little busier with another deal coming just before 3. They have noticed they have been a little weak in the WR core so they decided to go out and get a solid threat in WR Ben Roland from the Blacksmiths. Roland should help alleviate some of the pressure from WR Edmund Landry and provide another strong weapon for QB Todd Baker. Pittsburgh would receive WR Johnny Starwood and a 3rd Round Pick for the Wideout. It is likely WR Moe Schafer will slide into the WR3 spot for Pittsburgh down the stretch.

Tuesday, August  17, 1965 - 5:40 PM ET
Everything quieted down for a while, but then there was one last trade that was made just ahead of the 6 PM ET deadline. A deal that had actually been talked about originally in the offseason was finally put through. Both the Royals and Mariners had been discussing a move that would send RB Don Gregson to the Mariners for DB Ole Snurlson, but the Mariners ended up being hesitant on the move, but now that they saw a need for a backup RB to help take some of the load off of RB Ronald O’Sullivan they would make the move. The full deal would be RB Don Gregson, a 4th round pick, and DB Anthony Poirier to the Mariners for DB Ole Snurlson and RB Aaron Walken. The Royals were not using Gregson due to having both RB Corbyn Knight and RB Wally Morton, so they moved him to get a young 25-year-old DB that could help with depth in the secondary down the road. The remaining players were more roster moves to keep even rosters.

1965 Week 9

4th Q
19-12 LOU - PTD QB Leonidas Dumont -> WR Sammy Moss
22-12 LOU - FG K Frank Hughes

The Thunder kept up their hot streak despite becoming heavily shorthanded in the secondary with S Johnny Berger leaving with an injury.
The Gold Stars’ struggles continued despite their upset of the Blue Wings last week which might have been caused by the trades they had made over the deadline.
RB Rodney Clark returned for Louisville and had a solid outing with a touchdown and 93 yards on the ground.
The Thunder do manage to keep themselves in the fight in the west, but without Berger, the battle could be a lot more difficult down the stretch.

Boston Independents - 21, Indiana Victors - 14 - Richardson Stadium - August 21, 1965 - 12 PM ET - Weather: Clear

Boston and Indiana had a strong duel that came down to the final drive of the game where Braddock was able to lead a clutch game-winning drive.
Indiana kept in the fight, but they could not stop the monstrous drive from Braddock and the Independents.
WR Evan Clanton continued to show how he has improved this season with a 2 touchdowns game that puts him at 8 on the season.

Montreal Rouge - 13, Buffalo Blue Wings - 26 - Mount Royal Stadium - August 21, 1965 - 3:30 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

4th Q
13-23 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch
13-26 BUF - FG K Ryan Perch

The Blue Wings rolled into Montreal to snap a 2-game losing streak while the Rouge continued to struggle with more and more mistakes throughout the game.
Charles Lemieux played really well in his home province, throwing a pair of touchdowns, one of which required him to make a stellar escape from the clutches of DL Lucas Kipling before throwing it to Pembroke in the endzone.
Another loss puts Montreal in a much more difficult spot with 3 games to go; QB Gene Bishop, who still leads the league in passing touchdowns, is certainly frustrated with the team’s play this season, feeling like his teammates are letting him down.
That’s to no surprise with 3 fumbles coming from offensive players that were not named Gene Bishop.

Toronto Steelheads - 38, London Tigers - 29 - Anderson Stadium - August 21, 1965 - 7 PM ET - SNF - Weather: Partly Cloudy

The Steelheads bounced back from back-to-back losses with a strong offensive performance against the Tigers.
WR Ben Roland and LB Sebastian Andrews III both made impacts in their first game with the Steelheads, specifically Roland who opened up the offence for Baker.
K Nimrod Handsworth continued to be clutch for the Tigers kicking 5 field goals in the loss.
TE Micheal Bowman III also found the endzone for the Tigers in his first game as the team was able to use some similar plays they would have used for the injured TE Tranquille Rousseau.

It was death by field goals for the Blacksmiths who, despite scoring a pair of touchdowns, could not keep up with the leg of Ira Foster, who was the only Royal to score all game.
Ottawa’s offence struggled to get into the endzone, but they were consistent enough to make it down to field goal range 6 times.
Pittsburgh did struggle in the first half offensively with QB Buck Murphy, so they decided to make a change in the second half to QB Mike Key who did light a spark and got the team back into it and into overtime, however, they were not able to score in the extra frame.
Rookie LB Sam Wheeler also had his first forced fumble of his career in his first start for the Royals.

The Raiders rolled on to their 4th straight win, taking down the Mariners for yet another game where they didn't allow more than 10-points.
The offence certainly has had things easier without needing to light up the field to win games this season.
Halifax’s offence was smothered by the Raiders’ defence; QB Michael Benedict had an especially rough game with 2 interceptions and a fumble.

The Tigers were able to bounce back from their tough loss to the Steelheads with an overtime win over the Independents.
Boston had the Tigers against the wall in the 4th, but Riley Kiernan was able to pull a strong drive out to get the Tigers into overtime and then continued throughout the extra frame leading to an eventual 10-point win.
Boston is getting a bit worried in the East division following the loss which may open up the door for Ottawa and Halifax to make a push towards a playoff spot.

A windy day in Buffalo created quite the battle that ended with the Victors coming from behind to retake their lead over the Blue Wings in the West Division race.
QB Lyle Painter was able to throw another pair of touchdowns in the win, continuing to reinforce a lot of the MVP talk he has been getting this season.
The Victors’ defence also came up huge late in the game to stop Buffalo and allow the offence to march down for the game-winning field goal.
It is a tough loss for Buffalo to take as they start to fall behind in the race down the stretch; each one of these games are becoming that much more important with how close the West Division is.

The Thunder won their 4th straight game to put them right in the West Division fight with several other 6-4 teams.
The offence looked solid against the Blacksmiths with their highest-scoring game of the season.
WR Piers Key had a strong day in what has been a fairly disappointing season from his perspective.
The Blacksmiths did roll with QB Mike Key in this showdown, and he struggled a lot against the Thunder secondary, throwing 2 interceptions in the loss.

The Rouge were able to pull off an important win over the Royals on Saturday night which will give them the tiebreaker over their rivals this season, however, it came at the cost of QB Gene Bishop.
The QB jumped up to run the ball and he was simultaneously tackled by LB Joe Larkin and DL Olaf Viktorsson; Viktorsson was behind the play had gone for a lower hit, while Larkin went high, and the resulting play ended with Bishop’s leg bending in ways it was not supposed to.
Bishop would have to be carted off and would be done for the season (Viktorsson and Larkin both apologized and made sure to help the fallen QB).
QB Rigobert St-Hilaire would take over and with RB Scott Mallard-White leading the charge, were able to still give the Rouge the win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

The Steelheads grabbed another win on the road over the Mariners behind a strong performance from RB Max Tracy.
The defence made QB Michael Benedict’s day a rough one, with a lot of pressure and causing several turnovers.
LB Daniel Carpenter had a forced fumble and DB Orville Blake and DB Luke Warren each had a pick.
Benedict was able to recover late in the fourth, leading a strong touchdown drive to pull them back into the game, but it came, too little, too late.

The Gold Stars managed to pull off another shocking upset taking down the Long Island Raiders at home.
The Raider defence certainly made their mark shutting down the Gold Stars’ offence overall and even knocking QB Connor O’Rourke out of the game on a hard hit.
However, with DB Neville Falkner and WR Cedric Peterson making huge plays Providence was able to win the game.
The offence for the Raiders was what hurt the team this time around with QB Stanley Troyer being unable to get the offence going and avoid costly mistakes.
The Raiders were the last hope of a team clinching a playoff spot by the end of the week, but with the loss, we still have 6 spots up for grabs with 2 games to go.

The Royals came through with a huge win over the Mariners in a must-win game.
QB Lee Rogers was on a mission in the first half with a pair of touchdowns that gave the Royals a massive lead early, and then K Ira Foster was able to stick the landing with 3 more field goals in the second half.
The Mariners’ offensive struggles continued throughout the game, especially without WR Shane Steadman who left the game early.
The loss puts an end to what seemed like a promising season where the Mariners had started 3-1, but have gone 1-6 since.

The Tigers escaped a much closer game than they expected to have with Pittsburgh with a win to keep themselves in the hunt in the West.
They were down heading into the final quarter, but Riley Kiernan made sure to give the team an 8-point lead with a few minutes to go.
Then, Pittsburgh managed to slip right back into the game with Mike Key leading a touchdown drive to pull them within 2 points.
The Tigers were able to stop them on the 2-point conversion to save the game and seal the win for London.

A defensive battle between the Rouge and the Raiders led to a game with only a couple of scores.
Montreal managed to pull off the win with a late touchdown and then the only score of overtime.
The win for the Rouge keeps the team alive in the hunt for the playoffs, miraculously after being 3-6 heading into the final 3 weeks of the season.
The Raiders once again struggled offensively and could only get the touchdown they got early on in the game, which does bring heavy concerns over the team’s commitment to QB Stanley Troyer.

The Gold Stars were more than happy to spoil the fun for their New England rivals to win their 3rd in their last 4.
QB Terry Bourbon had one of his best career games with a pair of touchdowns including the game-winning score.
Boston was always a step behind the Gold Stars except when they took a 3-point lead in the final quarter but were unable to stop the Gold Stars’ aggressive push to pull off the upset.
With another shocking loss the East Division remains undecided with still 4 teams hanging around looking for what could likely be 2 playoff spots coming out of the East.

***TOR wore their “Steelers” alternates for this game***
The Steelheads and Blue Wings went all the way to the bitter end of the 4th trading scores until the Steelheads managed to kick a game-winning field goal to be the first team to secure a playoff spot in the league (well and two other teams).
Toronto has shown a lot of resilience throughout this season and continues to show a lot of the doubters that they are wrong and they are a legitimate contender.
Buffalo is certainly feeling frustrated after their 4th loss in their last 5 falling all the way into a position of potentially missing the playoffs if they don’t come up with a win next week.
It could be especially frustrating with QB Charles Lemieux having a stellar game with 3 passing touchdowns.

The Thunder grabbed their 5th straight win, taking down the Victors in their rematch.
Dumont has been solid down the stretch, which may have been able to prove that he deserves to continue as the team’s starting moving forward, however, the true test is next week to get into the playoffs.
Despite the loss for Indiana, they do finally make the playoffs ending the longest wait to make the playoffs which ends in their 9th season, the previous long was the Tigers in their 8th season.
As a bonus, they will also still have a shot at taking their first division title with a win over the Steelheads next week.

1965 Week 12
Boston Independents - 14, Halifax Mariners -  21 - Richardson Stadium - September 11, 1965 - 12 PM ET - Weather: Cloudy

14-21 HFX - DTD INT DB Aquilio Ruiz

The Mariners managed to pull off the upset to close out their season with Boston slipping all the way to 6-6.
DB Aquilio Ruiz was the hero picking off QB Nathaniel Braddock in the redzone before getting a couple of blocks and taking the ball the distance to give the Mariners the shocking lead.
Outside of the interception,  Braddock still had a good game and managed to close out his season with 24 passing touchdowns with a 2 touchdown performance.
Now, Boston must rely on help from some other teams in hopes of getting themselves into the playoffs.

With Boston losing earlier in the afternoon, the Raiders jumped all over the opportunity to take the East Division.
Their defence rose to the challenge by shutting Ottawa down until the 4th quarter, and this week the offence managed to turn it up with RB Dareion Fields scoring a couple of majors and had 145 rushing yards to top that.
The Royals managed to hang in there until the last possible week, but they could not find their way past the Raiders defence in the end, even if QB Landon Ross had a couple of chances.
With only 7 points allowed, the Raider now beat the Thunder’s record for least PA in a 12-game season (146 in 1963) with 141 this season.

Buffalo took it to the Blacksmiths in their last-ditch effort to try and sneak into the playoffs, putting up 47 points in the win.
Being up 41-14, the team then turned to QB Jack Owens to play out the rest of the game and still continued to put up a pair of field goals.
Pittsburgh obviously got punched in the mouth, but on the bright side, they got to see some potential out of QB Magnus Torrensen who was making his first start.
Torrensen threw a pair of touchdowns and only 1 interception for an overall solid performance from a first-time starter.

Montreal Rouge - 20, Providence Gold Stars - 23 - Mount Royal Stadium - September 12, 1965 - 12 PM ET - Weather: Partly Cloudy

The Gold Stars continued their party crasher run with their 4th in their last 5 games ruining the Rouge’s late-season comeback.
QB Terry Bourbon looked good again for the Gold Stars who feel some confidence behind the QB who has adapted the offensive playstyle better than QB Connor O’Rourke has this season.
WR Cedric Peterson also balled out in a 2-touchdown performance making some key plays in the win.
QB Rigobert St-Hilaire gave it his best shot in replacement for the injured Gene Bishop, but his effort fell just short as the team will miss the playoffs after a severely disappointing season.

The Thunder were able to grab their 6th straight win on the road against the Tigers, closing out what looked like a disastrous 2-4 start that turned into an 8-4 finish.
The Tigers were close in the game, but they were unable to score in the final quarter and would fall short.
However, the good news for the Tigers is they do get the crossover which may mean they get a slightly easier path through the East.
As for the Thunder, they do get into the playoffs with a shot at a home game, while the defending champs of the Blue Wings will sit out of the playoffs.
*LOU clinches playoff spot
*LDN clinches crossover to East Division playoffs
*(also time to feel bad for DL William Sanderson who could not make the playoffs with the Victors, but then moves to Buffalo only to miss while Indy makes it...the sim is cruel.)*

The Steelheads continued their shocking season with a division-clinching win over the Victors.
It was a close duel but Baker’s game-winning touchdown to Landry was the decider that the Victors' offence was unable to answer.
Both teams will be ready for their playoff matchups, with the Victors now having to go on the road in the playoffs while Toronto gets some rest ahead of the West Division final.

1965 Division Semi-Final Preview
EAST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL - Boston Independents VS. London Tigers
Head-to-Head: W10 - LDN 27-17 BOS - OT
These two teams are very similar. They both feature a solid, consistent QB that will likely dictate the game, they also have solid offensive weapons in support and solid defences that can potentially make a difference. It is likely going to be a very close battle, as their regular-season matchup proved, that will likely come down to whoever gets the last say in the 4th quarter. If I have to put my bets on any QB, I would likely take Braddock at this point, who has consistently been able to lead a last-minute drive as if it was nothing.
My Pick: Independents

WEST DIVISION SEMI-FINAL - Louisville Thunder VS. Indiana Victors
Head-to-Head: W6 - LOU 13-20 IND; W11 - IND 24-28 LOU
We finally get to see the battle of the midwest in the playoffs with Indiana making their first-ever playoff appearance. Louisville will be their opponent and they certainly will not be an easy team to play as they have quietly rattled off 6-straight wins to go from 2-4 to 8-4. Indiana was the last team to beat Louisville (in Louisville) back in their week 6 battle. I think both teams will have a great shot at winning this game, however, I do think the Thunder will have a slight advantage in both their experience and the current hot streak they have been riding.
My Pick: Thunder
